I just noticed that "21 Guns" by Green Day is a bit of a rip-off of ELO's "Telephone Line", melodically anyway. What examples can you think of where one artist lifted something from another?

That is true and now you've forced me to admit that my hero Keith Richards relied pretty heavily on slight variations of the same riff for about 15 years. When he started with the open tuning with five strings he found a sound that I guess just kept repeating in his head.
