Tourne Tourne by Gabriel Yacoub. A song relevant to this time of year. I've tried to understand the lyrics in English but they don't really make sense in English (what was he smoking?) and sound better in French. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VtN6CE7v6PM&list=RDVtN6CE7v6PM&start_radio=1 There is a slight wobble in the sound in the middle. It's in the original video, not my doing. Reply #21. Nov 25 18, 3:42 AM |

It's about the turning of the years, and that it's around the time of the birth of Christ and the festival celebrating that. The chorus is: that changes nothing and the new year is coming. I think the sense is of the inevitability of the turning of the years. There's stuff about the child being a King who holds the moon and the stars in his hands. A sort of modern Xmas carol, I suppose. Reply #22. Nov 25 18, 3:53 AM |

Bob Dylan's folk music of the 60's is probably my favorite of the genre. I also really like Fairport Convention's music of the late 60's and early 70's. Reply #25. Dec 17 18, 11:33 PM |

The first recognizable American folk song is 'Springfield Mountain", about an incident that took place in Massachusetts. Patrick Sky recorded a different version of the song called "Rattlesnake Mountain" with tongue-twisting lyrics. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GyDinoBd2yQ Reply #26. Dec 18 18, 12:14 AM |

I hadn't visited this thread for a little while. I'm glad other people are adding to it. I want to add Dick Gaughan's best album (in my opinion) 'A Handful of Earth'. Sadly Dick Gaughan suffered a stroke in 2016 and hasn't been able to perform since. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_unoiaswZvw Reply #27. Jan 11 19, 12:08 PM |

I can't say folk music has been a huge part of my listening repertoire. However there is some folk like music I have enjoyed over the years. I really like Gordon Lightfoot and John Denver from the 70s. I also like Tracy Chapman and Jewel from the 90s. As for more recent I enjoy Mumford and Sons and Fleet Foxes. Probably my favorite thing about music is the diversity of sounds and styles that are enjoyable to listen to. Reply #30. Jan 29 19, 10:15 AM |

I figure everyone knows who Mumford and sons are but in case you haven't heard of Fleet Foxes here is one of their offical videos. They are very good. I hope I copied the link right...I don't normally copy videos...lol https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&url=%23&ved=0ahUKEwiK4-PmsZPgAhUJJt8KHfrXBxgQxa8BCCwwAw&usg=AOvVaw0VTJzWxrN8ZFOD4xbU2nov Reply #31. That was nice. The Fleet foxes sound reminded me of The Eagles somehow. One of the reasons I created this thread was because folk music doesn't get as much airing as other genres of music. Reply #33. Jan 29 19, 1:40 PM |

This is a beautiful song by Dougie Maclean https://youtu.be/wP8A9rtg0iI I saw him at Colchester Arts Center He has written heaps more beautiful songs but this song has special meaning to me because my nephew married a girl from the western Isles and at their wedding he sang it to her. Hi rubytops. I hadn't visited this thread for a little while. You've posted something very nice with a special meaning for you, I see. I don't know whether many people know that Dougie McClean wrote a song called 'The Gael' which was used (in another version) for the film 'The Last of the Mohicans' starring Daniel Day Lewis. Unfortunately the youtubevideo for Dougie McClean's live version is poor visually so I've linked the film version https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2pCv7k_Hzvg Kev, There are many music threads for mainstream and heavy metal music, but folk music is a neglected genre generally so I created one thread for it. Tri Martolod by Alan Stivell. Tri Martolod is a traditional Breton song. Lots of artists have sung it or used the tune (including in rap or heavy metal style music). Alan Stivell is the earliest I'm aware of, and he does it in traditional style. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wMQbcGNs9kg&list=LLGGEn5ziDGQqNRr1m3pwHBg&index=3 Reply #39. Feb 13 19, 3:24 AM |
