Subject: I've only read the first two books...

Is the third one any good? I love the beginning parts, when he is with the Dursleys. I've seen all the movies, but even being the avid reader I am, am just getting around to reading the books.

I liked all the books, and have actually read the whole series several times now. Keep reading :)

I thought the ending was crap. The amount of disconnects (author says one thing and then contradicts herself with no explanation a short while later) to be staggering, the morality was troubling (owning slaves is fine as long as you give them a trinket or two, to give just one example), a very heavy reliance on deus ex machina to resolve issues, exceptionally lazy writing in some instances (use of Accio in book 7, to give a circumspect example without spoiling anything), etc.

It can be a fun bit of light reading, but great literature it is not.

The third one is definitely worth reading.

I enjoyed all of them (while noting the writing faults and some inconsistancies).

They don't have as many inconsistencies as other popular books I've read *coughcough*

funnybuni, there are discussion groups and websites that have spent nearly two years going over the inconsistencies in Potter and they've barely scratched the surface.

What other series do you think is more inconsistent? Twilight? That's a case where the author loved her creation even more than JK loved hers.

All are good, except Order of the Phoenix. It was boring Prisoner of Azkaban and Goblet of Fire were the best.

The third one isn't my favorite, but you have to read all the way through the series. The seventh book is probably the best written book i have ever read. J.K Rowling, had to really think to write that one.

The endless camping trip is especially noted for the fabulous thrill a minute it provides. The lack of food because Hermione couldn't get her parents to give her a loan nor did anyone think to get money from Gringott's before the you know what hit the fan and not one of them thought to call Dobby, Harry's devoted house elf, who was dying to help Harry any way he could, and not to forget the bottomless weightless wonder handbag that held everything but snacks. And they said Muggleborns were good with logic, especially Hermione, who had been logical as early as book 1. Pity that fell by the wayside.

So many solutions to that problem and all three of them completely idiotic for an amazingly long time. But, I think, my favourite bit of info from #7 is the idea that using magic to cheat your way to something you have *not* earned (Ron's driver's licence) is completely acceptable and a fun thing to do. Even Hermione approves.

The morality of the Potterverse is astounding when you stop to think about it. Have jobs to fill in government? Recruit family and friends first! Dissension anywhere or critics asking uncomfortable questions? Silence them quickly and definitively. Torture for minor infractions is not only acceptable, it's actually gallant! And the best one of all, the idea that blood really does matter. In fact, it's the only thing that matters. A single drop of the purest gold-like blood ever to appear on Earth could save the world. The bad blood might be made tolerable by diluting it to acceptable levels. Wonderful stuff there.

lol, with the name "Syltherin" in your name, I thought you'd be more willing to defend the books.

I've only just now read the third book, and won't read the 4th just yet due to being busy. I won't be able to catch onto the inconsistencies until the second or third read, until I have time to analyze... it's that way with most books for me. Except for "Twilight", where I picked up the inconsistencies right away because they were so plain obvious...

Prisoner of Azkaban is good. My favorite is Goblet of Fire. Like CoolTeen said, Order of the Phoenix isn't too good in my opinion.
