I saw two movies recently. “Us” was one I had high expectations for. I heard from multiple sources that it’s great. Unfortunately, I wasn’t crazy about it. There were some questions my sister and I had that, upon seeing the “twist” at the end, felt needed to be answered. I guessed the twist, but that’s rare for me! The remake of “Pet Sematary” was one I had zero expectations for. It was pretty bad. The movie treated you like you had seen the 1989 original—which, for me, was definitely true. But it tried to trick those viewers, which just made the movie lose its flare. The dad in it… he didn’t sell it for me. At one point I realized he was crying, but the only reason I knew was because he had a tear. Dude, show me more, please. They changed the mother’s history and that really deterred the horror factor. When you compare what happened in the original VS this movie, it’s lame. Not nearly as scary. A side character, Pascow, seems to have a smaller part here, which is a shame. He’s an interesting character. I admit the original movie was one I saw as a kid, so I was pretty scared. This one? I actually laughed at one point. Yikes. Like “Us,” I had questions at the end, especially with the way the “undead” acted. I need to see a good movie now. Reply #1201. Apr 08 19, 11:51 AM |

*Rolls eyes* Jo, I hate drug humor (things in that nature) in movies. I don’t know if I’m supposed to be high to enjoy it or something, but I find myself bored with “comedic” situations movie characters find themselves in. Reply #1202. Apr 08 19, 12:00 PM |

I've seen trailers for the new Pet Sematary, and I'm already annoyed! Kids in masks (??), no sign of Gage, and they still can't get the colour of the darn cat right! My husband laughs at me for getting so worked up about such silly little things as the colour of a cat, because it makes no difference to the storyline, but it just irritates me. The little things should be the easiest to get right. I can't be the only one here who gets this way; trivia is important, right? ;-) Reply #1203. Apr 08 19, 10:52 PM |

Yesterday we watched John Carpenter's 'The Ward'. It certainly wasn't the best film I've ever seen, but it was pretty good. I didn't see the twist coming, and I've usually got it figured out in the first quarter. More interesting than it first seemed. Reply #1204. Apr 08 19, 11:03 PM |

Oh, I get it! When making a movie based on a book, something fairly easy like getting the color of a cat correct should be easy, one would think. Do you have Shudder (it’s like Netflix but only scary movies)? Just curious, because I know “Mandy” is on there. Reply #1205. Apr 09 19, 12:00 PM |

I know it isn't just me - fans complained so much about the cat being the wrong colour in The Hunger Games that they changed it and got a new cat for the rest of the franchise in the right colour. As for Mandy, no, we watched it on Now. Two hours of my life wasted. It had so much potential but was just a mess. Reply #1206. Apr 09 19, 1:56 PM |

Okay, one thing "Us" does have going for it are the opening credits. This song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sAPMW2fu3m0 When I first started listening, I was a little like... what is this? But keep listening! It's pretty cool! Reply #1207. Apr 11 19, 8:46 AM |

Jen, you're right, that is really cool! Beautiful and yet somehow very creepy and foreboding at the same time. I love music that can provoke emotions like that. I may have to watch the movie just to listen to the entire soundtrack in context. Reply #1209. Apr 12 19, 2:36 AM |

Sita Sings the Blues: a retelling of the story of Sita from the Ramayana. I really liked this one. It had four different art styles, each for a different part of the story. Shadow puppet animation was used when several commentators talked about the Sita story (MST3K style sometimes), (19th century paintings when the story was presented, flash animation for when Sita sings, and rougher animation for the framing story of a woman's breakup. It was very clever. I don't care for blues music, but it was incorporated very well; Nina Paley picked just the right songs to represent what Sita felt at every point in her story. Highly recommended: it's on DVD, as well as free on Youtube. Some other movies I've seen this year that I've enjoyed: Mirai: had similar vibes to When Marnie Was There. Marty: a very sweet story. It ended at an unusual, but realistic, point for a romance. Wait Until Dark: suspenseful. It didn't get all the details right about blindness, but did a good job on some of them; I liked how she eventually used it to her advantage. My Cousin Vinny: not all the humor worked for me, but it was still funny. (Spoiler warning) I liked that nobody was vindictive and out to get the kids who were wrongfully accused of murder. Everyone wanted to see justice done, and when the prosecutor (who's a nice, reasonable guy and got along with Vinny) saw evidence that demonstrated that the defendants could not possibly have committed the crime, he dismissed the charges. The sheriff, witnesses, jury, and judge were also not hostile to the truth and were willing to admit that they might be wrong. Reply #1213. Apr 27 19, 2:12 PM |

Caseena, yes, I too liked the way the kids were treated at the end of "My Cousin Vinny." Saw "The Curse of La Llorona," which scared the pants off of my friends (who, I admit, are sissies! Haha) but not me. It was a solid movie. Reply #1214. May 01 19, 2:35 PM |

"Ferris Bueller's Day Off" at my theater's "Flashback Cinema". It was a good time. I've seen it before but it had been some time. I can't wait for them to show "JAWS" again! Reply #1220. Jun 03 19, 8:57 AM |
