Jabberwok, have you seen the latest Harry Potter film? I haven't seen it yet, is it any good? :)

Going with Boy on Friday, I'm rather hoping for dragons.

Don't know about Harry Potter, but we're heading for Snowdonia next week. I may be the one expiring, whilst attempting to stop Boy disappearing into caves, mines and down crevasses.
LOTR and Harry Potter have a lot to answer for!

Having been in volved in Potter discussion groups over the internet for the better part of tha last ten years, the word 'canon' has taken on the additional literary meaning of the 'official' body of work. One sees it also in discussion groups about Tolkien. I mention only these two since they are the only discussion groups I've looked at. Since I have defined the term as I've used it and been told by one person who isn't involved in online fandom discussions, I'm ready to quit the site. Make one comment and get attacked for it.

Dumbledore's speech to Draco on the tower differs by a great degree. The American edition adds an entire paragraph that does not exist in the British first edition. Adjectives are routinely added to many of Snape's quotes in the American edition, adjectives/adverbs of a far more negative version than exists in the British version. These are but two examples of what I am referring to in my earlier comments.

Editions of books do sometimes differ. Some of the changes may be intentional as authors revise a manuscript for later editions, some are accidental misprints and some (like that extra paragraph in the tower scene) leave one wondering whether an editor got carried away and added bits on their own.

At any rate, when I post on a forum about a book written years ago, I assume the other people on the forum have actually read it. That and that alone is my bone of contention with Lesley.

And frankly, for what it's worth, Lesley I have nothing against you and wish you only the best.

So, what about you, Slytherinwitch. Did you want 'the boy who lived' to live?

Jabberwok, have fun - both of you. Fun and popcorn and not too many crevasses.

slytherinwitch, I appreciate that the word canon, or the term "literary canon," has been adopted by lovers of HP and Tolkien, and perhaps of other writers. It has also been adopted by people discussing the body of "classical" music. It may have been adopted by any number of other groups I don't know exist. But the mainstream significance of "canon is closed," and the meaning which is the first to pop into most people's heads, is the theological one.

"... I assume the other people on the forum have actually read it."
I'm sure you made that assumption initially, but I thought that enough contributors to this page had made it very clear indeed that a lot of people still haven't read the books: and that other contributors had made it very clear that knowing a character's fate in advance would spoil the books for them.

"I have nothing against you"
Thank you - I hope not! :D

If I wanted him to die would I have read the books or watched the movie? Or reread or rewatched?

It wouldn't be the mystical world if Harry had died, so just let him live!

I disagree. I know this is 8 years later, but I disagree. When I and most people I know speak of "canon" it is about a fandom. Most people I know aren't uber religious.

That said the same could be said the other way for people who aren't fans of much but are religious. Saying "most people" only means most people you personally know.

Further, with the post being in a thread about HP, contextually it means even more so that the Canon mentioned was HP Canon.

Though it turned out it wasn't closed either as much more has happened in that world since.
