Who here has read this book? I never knew it had such a deep story and meaning... I normally never delve too far into a book, but wow this is a really great book.

Hey I just starting reading this book. I have always heard about it. It is mentioned so many times in songs and movies and is also the book John David Chapman was reading immediately after shooting John Lennon. So I had to see what the big deal is. I've only read a little bit so far but seems pretty good. Can't wait to finish it.

I just read it this year for class and thought it was fantastic. Should be required reading for all teenagers in my opinion:)

"Should be required reading for all teenagers in my opinion:)"

Used to be - you used to see it on required reading lists all the time. Not so much anymore, in part because there will always be a few parents who object to the language and sexual situations, and in part because although emotionally it is still relevant, the cultural references are becoming pretty meaningless to modern teens.

Haha I just read it in class too! I was like deeply amazed at how in depth and how much thought JD Salinger put into the book. Its like he thought out every detail and he meshes it all in and he like makes Holden so realistic and so crazy!

This is like one of the best most interesting book I have ever read. Like the other books I read were just straightforward but my teacher made us analyze chapter by chapter and wow Holden is really CRAZY!

Yea I do agree everyone should be required to read it, but then yea there is the F word, some people who believe there is pedophiles and some close to sex scenes, but yea Holden would never do that. But I love it.xD

I read 'The Catcher in the Rye' in high school (in Grade 11, I think, but that was 56 years ago so I can't be sure) and I remember being totally engrossed in the story. A marvellous, well-written book. It's one of the two book I ever read through at one sitting! (The other was John Irving's 'The World According to Garp'.)

I actually didn't like it that much. It was okay, but I didn't find it, like, life-changing enlightening like it's sometimes made out to be.

I finished the book. This has always been on my list of books to read before I die. It took 46 yeasr but oh well. Yeah, great book. What I would like to know is who is more disturbing, Holden or me because I sure can relate to him sometimes. LOL!

Yeah, this is just a great book. It's a pity Salinger didn't write much of anything else, but maybe it's good that he didn't sully his reputation?

What, even when their offspring are easily old enough to cope, probably know more than the parents do, and can tell the difference between literature and real life? Shame. I must be a totally unfit parent, then, because I got my son reading Portnoy's Complaint.

I read it earlier this year, and want to read it again. It's actually a book I really like. Holden; the most innocent rebel in literature history.
