I would say someone who is easily recognised by a large number of people because of something they have done.

Anybody who is famous qualifies as a celebrity.

The lines are blurry sometimes. Interesting to look at from a quiz category point of view. Beckham is a sportsman, but also counts as a celeb I suppose. Marie Antoinette would be Royalty, but if they'd have had celebrities in the eighteenth century, she would probably have counted. Princess Diana was Royalty, but judging by pap snaps, also counted as a celebrity.

To me, to classify someone as a celebrity, they'd have to be famous for being famous - Jordan, Paris Hilton et al. Or, they may be singers, actors, sportsmen etc whose fame is out of proportion to their original work - Kerry Katona, Angelina Jolie, Simon Cowell, ex Spice girls and the like.

Right on, SuperSal. It doesn't take talent to be a celebrity, qv Paris Hilton and others of her ilk.

Everyone knows me around my university. I presented a poem I wrote back in high school at a lunchion in 2008. I have that very poem on video. Do I count as a celeb around my college?

Depends - do you have an eating disorder? Have you had plastic surgery? Have you made an exercise DVD? Spent any time in rehab? Adopted a child from a developing nation? You'd need to answer yes to at least three of the above to be considered a celeb!

Anyone who is seen heard on the radio or seen on a TV programme or movie would be considered a celebrity. Lots of reality shows are making celebrities out of those who participate, I love reality shows!

David Beckham would be a celebrity, Marie Antoinette more of a historical figure, don't you think?

No I do not have any children, have not made an excersize DVD, do not have an eating disorder. I guess I'm not a celebrity. I will have to put my poem on national T.V. A person doesn't have to be knoown all over the world to be a celebrity, in my opinion. Someone can be famous around their state, county, local community, or college such as in my case.

Tonight on BBC TV at 9.00pm UK time is "Celebrity MasterChef", one of the so called celebrities is a guy named Syd Little. He was one half of "Little & Large" a comedy duo from the '70s. He had no talent at all, his partner Eddie Large had all of the talent. Since they became has-beens Syd Little went back to obscurity were he so richly deserves to be. How can he still be called a celebrity in 2015. He wasn't even a celebrity when he was famous. I dare you to watch a "Little & Large" show on YouTube.
