Subject: "Change the Future" perk

Posted by: George95
Date: Mar 20 10

I reached Level 55 about a week ago and came across the perk to change a category in "Who's The Expert?". When I scrolled through the categories to enter in to the game, I noticed that there are categories not listed. Being a big sports fan, I especially noticed there were no sports categories. I am confused.

The list of categories changes every so often. You may see something you like another time. :)

Me want Simpsons... or Futurama

I would like to see Futurama as a topic too. There are plenty of quizzes/questions about it. Also, looking forward to the new episodes this June.

Fellow baseball fan, how awesome!

Yes I too wish there were more baseball categories. A friend of mine here (who earned the "Jack of All Trades" badge awhile back), has Expert category wins in "World Series," "MLB By Year" and a couple of other sports categories. They appear, but very seldom. I think when they do appear, they're one of the "cannot be changed" categories, which are usually some of the more obscure categories that need a turn in the rotation, so to speak.

Addressing Robert326's post:
The "Cannot be changed" tag is simply assigned to every 5th randomly chosen topic (regardless of how obscure it is). However a lot of people on here hate sports, so the chance of a changeable sports topic surviving 24 hours is pretty much 0%.

Addressing flopsymopsy's post:
I saved off the list of topics we can choose when I hit Level 55 in October. The only 2 additions in the 6 months since then have been "UK Railways" and "Country Music by Year" (at the expense of 2 Music 'R' categories). The list essentially NEVER changes.

Since so many people have hit Level 55 and most topics are selected by the players (with only about 320 categories to choose from), the game's getting a little stale. There have been days when I've already won 20 hours.
2 ways I'd spice it up:

1) Expand the list of categories we can choose from (including all topics which are available to be selected for "My Daily Quiz").

2) Keep track of the last time each category actually gets played and select the one that has gone the longest without being played for the "Cannot be changed" designation (instead of just some random topic).

I think those are both good suggestions. I'd like all categories to be in the rotation, to at least some extent.

Obviously not all should be in rotation, because some categories have one or two quizzes... There has to be some criteria. But you can't even select "Star Wars", and "Mixed 5, 10, 15, 20, and 25" were taken away. Now that we have a champs division, the mixed should go back on there... The reason it was taken off was because people dominated with fast times. Won't happen anymore with champ division.

Plus, with obscure topics, it truly shows the expert. Not a memorization game. I actually don't quite like the "choose a category" perk. All the same ones always appear; I have seen food and drink and animals for kids the last couple days I'm just sick of it.

Obscure topics should definitely be added. They weren't added because they were obscure, but the game says "expert", does it not?

Plus, I would really like to see a Sly Cooper category.... I would dominate: since I wrote most of the quizzes IN that category. ;-) Haha.

Add a few baseball ones, put Stephen King in there, make Survivor it's OWN category, not "TV Stars Mixed"... Really make the game MUCH MUCH MUCH bigger. :-)

Stephen King is in there - well I have a win in him so he must be in there somewhere... (and I have no recollection of the win, or every playing that category lol but it's on the page so it must be true. I *think* I got really lucky one morning when Schoonie was on his holidays :-D)

I don't think the Mixed subcategories should go back in, and I even think things like Thematic Fun and Alphabetics should be removed, because when you take just one question out of the context of the whole quiz, it's essentially just a Mixed hour, and Champions division or not, it's just going to be a speed test. Yes, that happens in other categories too, but the whole point of Expert is to get a title saying that you're an expert in a *specific* topic. To me, being an Expert in "Mixed 25 Questions" means nothing.

Then shouldn't all the previous "mix 25 questions" winners have that removed from their list? It doesn't seem quite fair that we had the category for months and months, and only a handful has the category, because they dominated with 20-25 seconds every time... Now that the category is retired, it doesn't seem fair... Badges don't retire just after a few people win it.... It is ongoing. Why can't the expert categories be this way?

It's one category in hundreds. Its significance is minimal. Plus, I won it and am keeping it ;)

No swami. We who have the Mixed # expert wins earned them. Try and take them and you may lose a hand. lol

Twas my second win. Back when I was a nipper and divisions didn't exist. I had to fight off the "big dogs" :P

It was also back when two or three players constantly won, and many could not win it. It was impossible. That is the reason it was taken off in the first place. But with champion division, I think we can bring them back. :-)

As I understand it, the mixed categories were not taken off because they were dominated by a handful of people, but rather because winning a Mixed knowledge round goes against the idea of being an expert in the category.

It was kind of both, I thought.

Thank you everyone for the responses. I do also miss the Mixed question categories but with the "Champions" division added I think maybe the domination might be limited in the divisions and a good competition would start up just like the other categories.

I only joined the main FT site last October (was active in a private monthly trivia tournament for a few months before that), so I personally wouldn't mind bringing back a "Mixed 25 Questions" category, as I've never seen it in "Who's the Expert?"

I too like the concept of the Champions category. There were some categories I could never win because of one or two people that would monopolize them. Now they've moved on to the Champions division, giving others a fairer chance. That being said, it might dilute the uniqueness of the badges somewhat. I got my "Jack of Many Trades" before there was a Champions category, and it means a little more to me because of that. I still have my sights set on "Jack of All Trades." It will be a long haul...a little easier than it used to be before the Champions division, but still a long haul.
