Subject: "Fun Facts" Badge

Posted by: aya3098
Date: May 02 10

I've just started out on a quest for this badge. If I post facts on, for example, two United States, does this count for one fact or two?

Thanks in advance,
Aya

Each respective state or Canadian province or UK county counts as its own fact. You could do a fact for every state and have each one count as long as it's not a copy of a previously-posted fact.

I thought it was one fact per country. That is why I'm not going for that badge. lol Was I wrong?

I think it's for any region represented on FT - at least a couple of hundred. Click on 'People' at the top of the Home Page, then 'Local Meet-ups and Chat' for all the areas.

Just checked - there are 260 regional chat boards to post on.

I quite enjoyed getting the Fun Facts badge a couple of weeks ago. It's a bit of a slog though. My advice would be to do at earlier rather than later. The more facts there are the harder it is to find something new to post. There is always something to find though even if it's "Myrtle Fudgeknuckle, famous for inventing the left-handed flying widget was born in the town of Upper Sheepdip West in 1888." ;-)

Tizza, surely that was in 1889?

The badge was originally JUST the 50 states, and 22 provinces and counties... But it was expanded to the entire world, so yes, each state will count as one fact each, the the US could get 50 total toward the 72. :-)

I found there were some Countries and Counties especially in the UK where there very few posts and these are best ones to find as it is easier to find a fact that has not been posted. I also found a couple where I don't think the posts count as it says it must be Terry's post that fact recorded on and yet a couple like the Isle of Mann don't have a post by Terry, but someone else.

I did eventually get the badge and found the trip quite enjoyable

There are a number of countries in which it states "Posts in this thread do not count towards the FunFact badge". This is the case for Myanmar and quite a number of other smaller countries. Is this still the case? There are several places where the Fun Facts stopped at around 18 Fun Facts presumably because that notice was posted and no one thought it worthwhile. These posts were done in May last year. It's worth reading all the posts before researching an area to make sure it's not one of the areas that don't count toward the badge. :-) Supersal1? I'm fairly sure about the date for Myrtle Fudgeknuckles DOB. I'm a bit of a Fudgeknuckle history buff but I could be wrong. It's been known to happen. ;-)

I found that it helped to have a "theme" to your facts. I started trying to post random facts but it was confusing and difficult to remember who had posted what where.

I am a cycling nut so I did a series of cycling facts around the world. I must admit though that, unless you too are a cycling fan, some of them could be classified as marginally less interesting than Myrtle Fudgeknuckle's left handed flying widget :)

The other thing I did was keep a list of regions I'd posted in for Fun Facts. If I hadn't I would have kept going back to regions I'd already done. Once I got up to about 60 it was quite motiviational to think "only 12 to go!" and helped me finish it off. I would have lost count if I hadn't kept a list and then had to check all the areas to count them up...

Themeing a good idea as is printing off the list of boards and then crossing them off as you post on them.

Tizzabelle, yes, it's only in the threads started by Terry where your facts will count. Those are the ones that are "hooked up" to the counting mechanism.

Cheers for the info agony. I got my FF badge a couple of weeks ago but I was wondering why some were counted and some weren't. Mystery solved. :-)

Right, only the threads started by Terry count. Some countries don't have them.

Actually, you do not have to search for any posts saying "Posts in this thread do not count..." - that post is just a reminder to people because there are threads that look like they might count to the uninitiated but in reality do not.

To see whether a thread counts right from the thread listing, verify that
(a) its title is "Fun Facts about [Country name]" with exactly this capitalization,
(b) it has been posted by Terry.

No other threads will count. If another player except Terry creates the thread, the system will not catch it.

Also, for everyone's (and especially Terry's) help, here's a list as of May 3, 2010 of which countries do NOT have an official, working Fun Facts thread:

Albania
Brunei
Cuba
Dominican Republic
Egypt
Fiji
Jordan
Kosovo
Latvia
Libya
Lithuania
Montenegro
Myanmar
Namibia
Panama
St. Vincent & the Grenadines
Trinidad & Tobago
Ukraine

I haven't fully checked the states, provinces, territories and UK counties, those are probably all okay since they were added once and haven't seen further boards being created. Until Terry gets around to adding these 17 threads, please don't use these countries for the Fun Facts - it won't help you to try.

It would be great to see threads for those missing countries - a lot of them are the same as the 'unloved' countries for which quizzes have had to be written for the Bus Ride. (As I wrote several of them, these countries would be easy for me to offer information on, to get a start!)
