Subject: A suggestion for the Team vs Team game

Posted by: GuruOfTrivia
Date: May 15 10

As the leader of a fairly new team I sometimes see that my team is doing very well in the Team vs Team game, and hope that our score stays high through out the day--and then some one gets a low score and brings the team down. I think that a good addition to the Team vs Team game page would be a little box where the team leader could post a daily message regarding whether or not others should play that day, and risk bringing the team down. I don't want to exclude people, and am not sure if this is the best solution to this problem. I'd love
to get your opinions!

I think your idea stinks!

I think that that would undermine a key dynamic of the game, which is designed to gauge the strength of the team as a whole, and if you have a couple of weak players, then that will reflect in your score. The teams that have lots of good players will do better. The best solution to this problem is to try to institute some sort of training program for your less experienced team members. You're the team leader! Be creative!

Jonathan, your answer was much more helpful and diplomatic that mine. Thank you for saying it so well.

There's a blurb on our Team vs Team page that states that the daily team score is the average of the top 10 players for that day, and that you can't possibly bring down the team score by playing. I assumed this encouragement was standard to ALL teams, but apparently I was mistaken. If your focus is strictly on competition and not enjoyment of the game and comraderie with your teammates, you'll have a tough time attracting new members....who might be stronger players.

I know that if someone told me not to play TVT, I would purposely tank. How does a 6/15 in 120 seconds sound?

This rears its head occasionally.

It is the reason my former team split up. I do not agree with excluding any players from playing ANY game and will never be part of a team that does. Really it is the game that is flawed and I have said as much on the forums when this has come up. Why so many players are against making it like Team Heroes in format I do not know. It is the only daily or hourly on the site that needs updating.

I guess I did not think this through AT ALL! I don't know what I was thinking when I posted it. Also, I did not realize it was the average of the best ten. Thanks for knocking sense back into my head

You can either take up Jonathan's suggestion of "training" weaker members, or you can simply embrace the pleasure of being in a team. Any of my fellow team members who have apologised for their low score in team games have immediately been shouted down. "Who cares what your score is - just play"!

I've never been in a team whose leader told anyone not to play, because their score would spoil the total, although I believe that it does happen. It's never happened in a team I've been in. I wouldn't want to stay if it did, and I would certainly be put off joining a team where nothing mattered but team scores. If you do well, that's OK. If you don't do as well - does it matter? Not a lot!

Whoops I was writing while you were posting. You've got a big, active team. Looks good to me.

I think the team score is the average for all team members playing, not the top ten. That's what it says on the game page.

I'm with Lesley here. If anybody tries to apologise on the team board for what they see as a 'rubbish' score, they make themselves a target for cyber eggs thrown, with force, at their heads...it doesn't matter really, does it? It's only a game after all...

I don't think it is an average of the top ten - but of all team members that play that day. It only shows the 'Top Ten Scores' - unless you click 'all players'. I believe there is an exception if your time is longer than 300 seconds, and your score is not counted as 'technical problems' are assumed. But so what? It is the TEAM game!

Anton, what's wrong with 6/15 in 120 seconds? Sounds good to me. And fast! :)))

I'm sure it's Team Heroes that counts the average of the Top 10 players, but Team vs. Team is the average of all who play. I know the original poster has taken the idea back, but I'm sure that some teams still actually work like this, and it defeats the whole purpose of this site, IMO. Who is to say who is "good enough" to play or not? And in any case, more experience with the game and the questions will improve a person's score. If people are excluded from playing, the best will get better, and the worst won't get a chance to improve! Just my two cents. There are people on my team now who have left previous teams for this. I just don't understand how someone could think they are in a position to say who is "allowed" to play a game, Team Leader or not! :P

I agree with those who have mentioned this is an ugly topic.

Having it in it's current format does end up with situations where a team member who gets a tough set of questinos can have a decent impact, espeically on teams where not as many players play, and someone with an easy set can also have a decent impact.

I think if a team starts geting into fusses over the performance of one of their members in a game, then the team isnt' that close knit, needs to look at what their goals as a team are and adjust their membership accordinly.

I think something would be lost if the TvT was adjusted, though maybe something along the lines of competition scoring, where highest and lowest for the day aren't counted might not change the spirit of the game.

Just to let you guys know I never exclude players from anything. I thanks for your suggestions! Also the team vs team game is the average of ALL players, not just the top ten, right?

I can't understand the point of this post as surely it defeats the objective of the first part of the name of the site FUN Trivia, surly that menas it should be FUN for everyone not just a selcted few, we are all at different levels and the only way to progress is to try everything and mostly have FUN whilst doing it.

Surely the point of any quiz on FunTrivia is to have fun and to learn something. When one gets too intent on winning badges, getting the highest scores in the shortest time and other such competitive attitudes, the point of FunTrivia is lost. I'm glad my team doesn't function that way. We're all in it for the enjoyment.

Hey Guru, that wouldn't exactly be a fair idea as it would would mean that any player playing TvT wouldn't know what kind of questions compose that specific TvT game and would have to consequently play to find out, thus bringing the Team's average for that day down if it wasn't that player's best topic/s.
