Born on this day - Joseph Williamson, an English philanthropist and eccentric who employed teams of workers to build a labyrinth of tunnels at Edge Hill, Liverpool. They have no known purpose other than providing a living for the labourers. A song called, 'The Moles of Edge Hill,' recounts their story.

Born on this day in 1819 - Henry Tate, an English sugar merchant and philanthropist, noted for his many bequests to charity and for founding the Tate Gallery in London, which he endowed with his personal collection of pre-Raphaelite paintings. After his death the firm merged with Abram Lyle to create Tate & Lyle.
