Subject: The Walking Dead

Tonight was the premiere of the much anticipated new series "The Walking Dead", which I watched and really enjoyed. As a zombie lover it's great to have an actual ongoing series about them rather than just a ninety minute film. Any fellow zombie fans out there have an opinion yet?

It premiered in the UK last night. The zombies were appropriately scary and the plot fast paced and dynamic. Unfortunately, the whole thing seems like a contrived serialized version of "28 Days Later", a fine film, which in itself was a ripoff of "Day of the Triffids" only substituting zombies for the lethal plants. Despite the apparent derivativeness of the work, it is still worth watching, if only for the UK Manchester-born Andrew Lincoln's hilarious attempt at a Georgia accent lol.

Sorry, my mistake, London born, but played mancunian in his most famous role prior to this. And the accent was better than some attempts by english actors and actresses.

A lot of people are making the comparison between "28 Days Later" and "The Walking Dead", but when I looked them up the movie was released June 27, 2003(at least here in the U.S.) and the comic book came out in October of 2003, so I don't really see how it's possible that we're looking at a rip-off situation. I just attribute the similarities to the whole zombie genre in general. If you watch a lot of zombie movies there are certain things that are almost always consistently seen. I have also seen the comparisons made to "The Day of the Triffids", but I haven't seen that movie myself. I do actually have the movie, just haven't actually watched it. I take you have, if so maybe you can tell me what you thought about it and if it's worth the watch. Anyway back to the show, it is getting a lot of positive feedback and was actually picked up for a second season before the pilot even aired (definitely a good sign)so hopefully it will be around for a while.

I think that there is little room for going off on a tangent with zombie films, but I will wait until the second episode (next Friday) before making a judgement, there was a lot of character and plot establishment in the first episode, so the second could be very different. As for Day of the Triffids, the 1962 film starring Howard Keel is looking a bit dated. There are two BBC (British Broadcasting Corporation) serializations of the novel (which is worth reading in its own right). The 1981 adaptation is looking a bit dated and is a bit slow, but is a faithful adaptation of John Wyndham's 1951 novel. There was an adaptation done last year (2009) which has been updated and modernised and is less faithful to the novel but is very good. It consists of two 90 minute episodes, so misses out a lot from the book, but is worth a look to get the feel of the novel. Wyndham is a good novelist, some of his other works like Midwich Cuckoos (Village of the Damned) have been adapted for film and TV as well, and novels like The Kraken Wakes and The Chrysalids are good reads and well ahead of their time.

Thanks for the input. I think the movie we have is the remake, but I'm not sure since it was my boyfriend who got it, but I will give it a watch. The second episode of "Walking Dead" aired here last night and I won't spoil anything, but I thought it was very good. I know even though the pilot opened up with a bang, it was more about character development, but last night's episode definitely had more action in it and a few laughs, and of course more getting to know people. I hope you enjoy it as well :)

mjws, maybe Andrew Lincoln's botched Georgia accent is payback for Dick Van Dyke's atrocious Cockney in 'Mary Poppins'?

That is possibly true, they are as bad as each other. Watched episode two, which was much better, actually a rather decent plot, although the whole "cut up a zombie and smear yourself with the results so that they don't scent that you are alive and can walk among them" scene was too much for my 90 year old grandmother lol. Definitely improving.

I have just recently discovered this series and am having a nightly battle with myself not to binge watch loads of it!

I’m half way through series 2 and thoroughly enjoying it!
