Does anyone here enjoy reading a good, scary ghost story from time to time? If so, which ghostly stories would you say are among your favorites? Feel free to list as many as you'd like, I won't complain! :)

rockinsteve, apparently, Stephen King had a very interesting time during his stay at the Stanley Hotel and The Shining is the result. I remember reading that Mr. and Mrs. King were the only guests in the hotel as it was about to close for winter. Jim Carrey checked into the same room Mr. and Mrs. King used. Jim checked out in three hours. Apparently, it isn't just 217 that's 'interesting'. Room 401 is more so. I read Ghost Story just after it was published. I still remember it in vivid deal. Yes, I re-read some books I haven't read in a long time. I re-read both The Shining and Ghost Story many years after first reading them. I often gain a new perspective and notice things I missed from my initial reading. Reply #23. Apr 05 15, 3:55 PM |

I love "A Christmas Carol," but it's certainly not scary. For sheer scare the you-know- what out of you, two vampire novels are at the top of my list: "They Thirst" by Robert R. McCammon ( coolest title!) "'Salem's Lot" by Stephen King Reply #26. Jul 12 15, 6:11 AM |

Do they ever put ghost stories on TV? We used to have a programme called "The Christmas Ghost Story" on TV every Xmas in the UK but I think they may have dropped it now. Winter is just the right time of year to watch or read ghost stories. Reply #32. Jul 14 16, 2:04 PM |

I never think of 'A Christmas Carol' as a ghost story per se. It's not scary, and that's why, I guess. Much as I admire Stephen King in his Richard Bach persona and as a human being, I'm never going to read any of his horror stories. I still live alone, still have an active imagination. I hear you, Cymruambyth, about the tv news! How about friendly, even helpful, ghosts for your reading? My first two thoughts were of Topper and possibly The Ghost and Mrs. Muir. Elusive Dream,have you ever read 'The Lovely Bones' by Alice Sebold? Your ghost story idea is somewhat similar, although the murdered girl in 'The Lovely Bones' is merely a spectator in what happens after her death rather than an active participant in solving the crime.
