Here is a representation of earthquakes in California this morning. The red squares are earthquakes that have happened within the last hour. The blue squares happened within the last 24 hours. The yellow squares happened within the last week. Yes, California has many earthquakes, but the two in the San Francisco area yesterday are significant because they happened on the Hayward fault and it is a concern to many seismologist. http://earthquake.usgs.gov/eqcenter/recenteqsus/Maps/special/California_Nevada.gif Reply #2. There's an Earthquake Day? Who knew? I wonder if the people affected by the massive earthquake in Turkey did. Reply #5. Oct 24 11, 6:28 PM |

In Illinois we live under the threat of the next New Madrid Fault earthquake. While most people associate earthquakes wih California, our worst earthquake was the New Madrid earthquake of 1811. There has been virtually no preparation for what must inevitably happen: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Madrid_Seismic_Zone Reply #6. Oct 24 11, 8:06 PM |

I used to live in Hayward, California, right on the Hayward fault line and experienced quite a few quakes and tremors in those five years. The first decent quake literally threw me out of bed. However, I much prefered living in an earthquake zone than living in a hurricane or tornado zone, or a war zone! Reply #7. Oct 25 11, 5:02 PM |

Cym, you're not the only one who did't know there was a "National Earthquake Day". Really??? Reply #8. Oct 25 11, 5:12 PM |

I'm with you, Mother Goose - especially the war zone (been there, done that!) Where I live, the worst natural hazards are blizzards in winter (stock up, stay indoors) and humidity in summer (stay hydrated) and that's about it. Reply #10. Oct 25 11, 6:30 PM |

Actually it was not a national earthquake day. It was The Great California Shakeout. http://www.sfexaminer.com/local/bay-area/2011/10/earthquake-shakes-san-francisco-bay-area-great-california-shakeout-day Reply #11. Oct 25 11, 6:38 PM |

We have daily tremors here. One becomes accustomed to it. Sometimes the steady rumble beneath me helps me doze off. Anybody else notice how much clearer that sound is when lying in bed? Reply #12. Oct 25 11, 6:55 PM |
