Subject: how do you choose what to read?

Do you go with a bestseller, do you take advice from friends, do you browse a lot of books in the bookstore, do you search for your favourite author, do you have favourite topics?

One tip - putting a book you're travelling with inside a carrier bag protects the cover from getting battered.

One day I was in a charity shop which mainly sells books and I saw a whole set of volumes (6 of them) on Irish history. They were quite old publications - first half of the 20th century. I bought the lot and read them all from volume 1 to volume 6. They started in prehistorical times which involved some legends but there's such a strong thread of oral history in Irish that there is probably some truth in those. DNA tests more recently have confirmed that the older Irish populations came from Spain as these old history books claimed. Anyway volume 6 finished in the early 20th century. It's a very bleak history from the 12th century (Norman invasion from England) and things only start to get better from the early 19th century with Daniel O'Connell's success in fighting for Catholic emancipation, the right for catholics to sit in the Westminster Parliament and he worked to repeal the act of Union. I've just found out today that he died from "softening of the brain" Cerbral softening is a recognised medical condition. I wonder if that's where the expression "Have you gone soft in the head?" comes from.
