This was the topic of a segment on our TV last night on a current affairs programme. It will be interesting to see what happens. Sometimes sequels fall flat like the Novel "Scarlett" as a follow up to Gone with the Wind. In my opinion it just did not cut it.

"Scarlett" was a let down. There's always a risk when writing a sequel to another author's book.

Hopefully, "Go Set a Watchman" will be just as successful as Ms. Lee's first book.

My copy arrived a few hours ago. I've read about a third of the book so far.

I've read it, interesting idea, but it probably wouldn't have made as much sense if I hadn't read "To kill a Mockingbird" first.

My sense of the relationship between Scout and Atticus comes from "Mockingbird", what they went through. It would be a lot harder to understand the depth of their relationship, and thus Scout's feeling of betrayal unless I'd had that extra insight.

Got to admit, I much prefer "To kill a Mockingbird"

You could discuss the book here as well.

True, lady of luck.

I prefer Mockingbird too. But that book was edited and the rewritten version of Watchman. Meandering passages that don't contribut to the story are in Watchman but not in Mockingbird.

Refunds? Apparently, some readers are requesting refunds for Go Set a Watchman.

I thought once you bought a book, it was no refunds.

How ridiculous.
They were expecting a sequel, as Watchman is being called too often and incorrectly. It is not a sequel. It is also a writer's first draft of a book that took three years to rewrite and be edited heavily. First drafts rarely hold up to the finished product.

And, yes, I was always under the impression that when you bought a book it was final sale. An exception would be made if 20 pages were blank when there should have been text but that's about the only reason for a refund.

MiraJane - unfortunately, no. Life is being a stinker right now and reading....I don't have the patience nor time.

I haven't read it yet, but seeing the acclaim for her first book, I hope this doesn't detract from Harper Lee's reputation.

I have read Go Set A Watchman. I thought it was an excellent book. Not as good as To Kill A Mockingbird but good in it's own light.
I read the book than reread it. I really don't get the point of Atticus being labeled a racist.

jewaki, he attended a Klan meeting. That would label him a racist.

To Kill a Mockingbird was published during the civil rights movement in America. To have the hero lawyer of the novel going to a Ku Klux Klan meeting, and Scout's fiancé going, having agree with what was said, and aunt agree with it, would have damned the book in the eyes of the public. That part had to be edited out of the book if To Kill a Mockingbird was ever going to have a chance with the book buying public.

Harper Lee always said Atticus was modeled after her father. Harper Lee's sister had always managed Harper Lee's affairs. Within a year of the sister's death, we had the announcement that Watchman was going to be published. I wonder if Harper Lee didn't publish it to protect her father's reputation while her sister was alive.
