Subject: Building bigger and better characters

As most of you probably know, I enjoy story-writing. My characters, however, are very basic. Dows anyone have any tips on how I can create more advanced characters?

Sorry about the spelling mistake. I meant 'does' not 'dows'. Silly me!

Try and think of it as a role playing game. Try and become the character and write what they would do in any given situation. Or maybe model some of their characteristics off people you know or have heard of.

Give them a background. No one is plopped down at the age of 20, to begin their life. Childhood, teen years, early adulthood... all have an impact on who we become. Your characters should have a 'back story'. You don't need to give an entire biography, but a reference to a friend, or past incident (good or bad), gives some depth.

I need one more thing for my new story: a short song, something like a slow ballad that a mother might sing to a newborn baby.

The sea is your home
You are never alone
As long as you're here with me.
Feel its gentle carress as it sends you a-floating
To the beach where you'll dance for me.
Then return quickly home
So the humans won't know
Of our dance of the full moon bright
And returning back home
Feel the spray on your cheek
As the water it rocks you to sleep.
The sea is your home
You're never alone
As long as you're here with me.

One thing some authors do is to observe characters around them in real life, either people they know or from experience, and take aspects of those to create fictional characters.
