Subject: Plastic Bags - Thoughts

Posted by: supersal1

An odd week and exciting week this week for plastic bags.

Apparently, they are evil incarnate when it comes to the environment. England has just caught up with the rest of the UK and supermarkets by law now have to charge 5p for each single use plastic bag.

Meanwhile, in Daventry, Northamptonshire, after 1st December Dogwalkers can be fined £100.00 for not carrying a plastic bag with them. No matter that you are 20 yards from reaching your home and you started your walk with a pocketful of bags, you can be fined.

Thoughts anyone?

Announced on the news that in the first year of charging 5p for plastic bags in England, the sale of plastic bags has reduced by some phenomenal amount - by about 80% I believe. NI, Wales and Scotland were the first to introduce bag charges and sales there have gone down by between 70-80%.

In response to 13LuckyLady's comment about not being able to carry cloth bags. may I suggest that she use my solution? I also am well past the age at which I can carry several heavy bags, so I bought myself a wheelie bag. It carries a week's worth of groceries in one compact cloth bag on wheels, with a long handle so I can push or pull it along. I also have cloth bags that I use for light shopping trips. I don't put fruit or veg in the plastic bags provided for that purpose by my supermarket. I take paper bags from their bakery section and use those instead. I have gone beyond eliminating plastic bags from my life. I'm getting rid of all plastic wherever and whenever I can. I use large paper bags for household garbage, and glass containers with bamboo lids for leftovers and other food storage, and as plastic items I already own break down, wear out, or are no longer usable, I replace them with metal, glass. or some other sustainable material. When I did the inventory of my home use of plastic I was shocked to realize how much plastic we use in our day to day lives. My laptop case is - yep - plastic. So is my phone, my toothbrush (now replaced with bamboo toothbrush), the packaging for the ointments and creams in my medicine cabinet, my shower curtain....and on and on it goes. It seems to be that there's a genius out there somewhere who could come up with a way of making plastic biodegradable...and wouldn't that be nice? - but until we find said genius, we have to do our bit to stop our planet from choking to death.
