I remember when Leeds was the team to beat but they were very defensive. It was an effective but boring football style and other teams started copying it in the hope of matching their success. Thank goodness that style went out of fashion. A film called "The Damned United" - a biography of Brian Clough is well worth seeing for anyone who hasn't seen it. It features Leeds United before and after Clough had his disastrous stint as Manager there. Don Revie was the Manager that brought Leeds their most success.

Looking back - Leeds should have persevered with Clough - 2 European cups with Forest tells it all ( plus league and league cup wins ) . But it wasn't to be , you can see what he was all about with his idea's at Leeds - now . The team was ageing , as for defensive football , Revie threw off the shackles for 1973/74 and the team played attacking football , funnily he was never that confident and I think giving the team more artistic licence may have worked wonders . That team , though it won a lot , did drastically under achieve .

Could be a tasty Championship playoff final if our respective teams reach the final, JonPunk, considering the touch line bust up at our place. Funny thing was I sit right by the dugout but I missed the flashpoint as I was too busy watching the Hef celebrate.

Have always enjoyed the games versus Leeds though since they were relegated to the third tier and we started playing regularly again. My other favourite celebration was from a couple of years ago when Adam Clayton scored the opener from the penalty spot and ran straight over to Neil Warnock to slide on his knees in front of him. It's the small things, it has to be really considering our recent history!

Oh dear for both Hudds and Leeds yesterday . Those play offs are going to be tough - not a lot between any of the sides that make it . Fulham coming with a late surge ..... may be the one's to watch .

Sheffield Weds fighting to cling onto their spot, good result for them yesterday beating Newcastle.

I agree all the sides occupying the playoff spots are very similar and could easily all beat each other.

The play off fight is going to go to the wire - very worrying . Then there's the play offs themselves . All adds to the fun I suppose , but its very tense , whoever you support in that top 7 - N'castle and Brighton look safe to go up avoiding the play offs .

Wendies ( Sheff Weds for those who don't know ) v Fulham last game of season - could decide final play off spot. Fulham have toughest run in with Huddersfield and Norwich also to play .

I'm a Leeds fan and I am getting nervous about the play-offs already. I don't think we are quite good enough, but then again all the other contenders have had their wobbles. Main thing is that the Wendies don't go up. I work with one and he's annoying enough as it is.

Well we have beaten Leeds home and away, lost home and away to Wednesday and one each with Reading. Still to play Fulham at home but they stuffed us 5-0 at their place. None of which will matter in the playoffs but still... makes me want to play Leeds!

I still have to pinch myself that we have made it so deep into the season whilst still clinging on to such a lofty position. I figured we would start to struggle once injuries and suspensions to key players started to bite. Especially to any of our super loan players.

Need to just confirm the playoffs then have fun against the other (bigger) teams who should be under more pressure.

Thula2 - my opinion whether we are good enough or not is it , got irrelevant . If it comes along got to go with the chance of going up while its there - might not happen next season , so whether the club is ready or good enough doesn't matter to me , got to grab at that chance ( same for everyone else as well ) - play offs might not happen next time around - look at Ipswich , last season 7th , their supporters thought this time around play offs schievable but they've been languishing down the bottom instead . Go up , then worry about it , hopefully get some better players and the good one's will stay .Football isn't like it used to be where you slowly built a side .

The Philadelphia Union managed to blow another home lead this Saturday to lose to Portland 1-3. (Mind you, Portland had never scored a goal in 3 previous appearances at Philly.) Now at 2 points in 5 games on the season and still haven't won since August 27. Next up is David Villa, Andrea Pirlo, and NYCFC in a nationally televised game Friday night. I know it's pretty much the definition of insanity, but I'll be there hoping for a different result.

It is good up in the dizzy heights of Championship League as I recall - we managed 2 seasons in it before reverting to our more accustomed place in soccer scheme of things!

After relegation down to basement League 2, at one stage this season further relegation out of Football League all together appeared more probable than a quick return to higher things...........however we now have a realistic chance of making the Play Offs, provided we can muster 11 players that are not injured !

Up the U's! :)

JonPunk - I totally agree, just hope my nerves can take it! Funnily enough, although I have been a Leeds fan since I was a nipper, by chance I have only been really followed intensely when we've been rubbish as I had drifted off to do other stuff in the years when we were good. As a result, this is about as exciting as it's ever been for me.

I am a Liverpool supporter (armchair variety) but I would like to see the sleeping giant Huddersfield Town back in the top level of UK football. They were giants in the '20s and were the first team to win the 1st Division three times on the run in 1923/24, 1924/25 and 1925/26. They were runners up in 1926/27 and 1927/28, they also won the F.A.Cup in 1921/22. I wonder how much those teams would be worth today.

nasty_liar knows this............but others do not........there is a firm link between our two teams:-

The twelve directors that formed the Board appointed Ted Davis, a former Huddersfield goalkeeper and Bath City manager, to be in charge of team affairs. On 14 July 1937 came the public announcement that the new club would be named Colchester United - a week after Davis' Yorkshire contacts enabled the players to be kitted out in the same blue and white strip as his former club Huddersfield.

Well , Leeds have never made it easy for themselves , if there's a way of throwing something away they will find it ...... and it looks like they've found it again this time around .

Went and sat in the rain today to watch Philadelphia Union blow a 3 goal lead against Montreal to end up with a 3-3 draw. Montreal has the second worst record in the conference. Thursday will be 8 months since the last win for Philly.

Some people on the Duel thread were saying Soccer is a difficult game to understand and that there were many different names for it.
1) Re different names. It's called football outside of the USA. The other names are merely translations of football into other languages (e.g futbol (Spanish) fussball (German) etc etc.
2) Rules of the game (broadly) 2 opposing teams of 11 players each try to kick a ball into each other's goalmouth to score a goal. Each team tries to score more goals than the other in order to win a game. Those are the basics
Except for the goalie whose job is to defend the goal and who can touch the ball with his hands, the ball can only be kicked with the feet or headed with the head, but not touched with the hands or arms (up to the elbow I believe) though the referee may use his discretion if he thinks it's a pure unavoidable accident. Touching the ball is a foul that gives a free kick to the other team. Players can try to get the ball off each other (called tackling) but they must play the ball not the man (don't attack the man with the ball rather than trying to get the ball off him). That would be a foul. Fouls can get you a yellow card which is a warning that if you foul again you will be sent off (shown a red card) and won't be able to play any more in the game, neither will the team be able to replace you in the game. A foul on an attacker in the goal area, (marked out by lines) is more serious. That will mean the defending team give away a penalty. A penalty is when the attacker's team is given a free shot at goal with just the goalie to beat. Falsely "diving" in the goal area, by an attacker, to pretend that a foul has been committed on him may result in a yellow card, if the referee spots that it's fake, and a free kick to the other side. Free kicks are the most common way of penalising breaking of rules unless it's a more serious foul.
If you knock the ball out of play, it goes to the opposing team who have to throw it in from where it went out. If it goes out behind the goal line, if an attacker puts it out, it's a goal kick (by the goalie) to put it back into play. If a defender puts it out, it's a corner kick by the attacker's team (a good chance to get it in front of goal and score a goal). The offside rule: when an attacker passes the ball to another attacker, at the point where he kicks the ball, there must always be a defender between the goalie and an attacker. If an attacker stands by the goal behind all the defenders, at the moment when the ball is passed, that is called offside (not allowed). Play stops and a free kick is given to the defending side. The offside rule is probably the rule that causes the most confusion for new spectators.
If you are not sure of the rules, you soon pick them up by watching a game and/or talking to fans.

I picked up the Rules of the game by helping coach my son through about 15 years of the game.
