Cape Farewell is a headland in New Zealand where 400 pilot whales who have become stranded at Farewell Spit in Golden Bay. So sad.

Wondering why they beached themselves....illness, pollution, needing help from bipeds.....

Because whales were once land animals (apparently), maybe it's a tragic built in drive to get back home.

I saw a TV programme on this. They reckoned that whales' sense of direction is interfered with or blocked by noises in the oceans such as shipping engines. Whales can hear noises from long distances. Another issue is lack of food in their normal feeding grounds due to global warming and pollution so they leave their normal fishing grounds in the hunt for food and get stranded. Another possibility is that whales are following sick members of their pods, because they have strong bonds, but those sick members are leading them astray.
