Subject: Favourite sporting events - all sports

What are people's favourite sports events on here . The FA Cup used to be huge in England but the advent of Champions league and Premier League means it has lost a lot of its appeal .
I love the World Cup and Olympics - no other vents really encapsulate attention world wide as much as these , other than that I do like to watch the Tour de France...a lot for the spectacular countryside and villages/towns in France .

Daytona 500, Bristol night race in August, Coca-Cola 600, The Masters, daytime Chicago Cubs games, March Madness, NFL playoffs and of course The SuperBowl.

I find it odd that you say the F.A Cup has lost it's appeal with the advent of the Premier League and the Champions league. Those leagues are not much more than renaming of what used to be league division one and league division two to make them sound more of a big deal. The F.A Cup will always appeal because it's a much more open competition but there is so much pressure now with all the European competitions and the other British competitions (The League Cup and the community shield (which used to be called The Charity Shield), and every 4 years there is The World Cup, that managers and players get tired and try to focus their energies somewhat rather than pouring all their best resources into all of them.

I also like the "Tour De France" and The Olympics. As for the rest I can take them or leave them really.

I'd like to watch the Superbowl, its shown in the UK but at ridiculous times - like 3am in the morning ..... selfishly so USA people can watch it live . Tut tut !!!! .
I loved the last Olympics in Brazil - it was such a brilliant spectacle and superb scenery ( much nicer than London IMO).

Mixamatosis - about the FA Cup ..... I feel its lost its importance with the clubs , many clubs don't seem to bother as its extra fixtures with added strain on players , especially Premier League clubs who are more interested in staying in the Premier League . This season ( 2016/17) has been unusual in that 4 of the top 6 clubs in the country have made the semi finals . Champions League has taken over in importance and I think a lot of clubs are more interested in trying to get into the top 4 rather than winning anything . Its a shame football has gone that way especially at the detriment of football's oldest trophy . Maybe it will regain its importance in the future - who knows . I know I'd love my club to win it again , for the first time since 1972 .... and only time .

I agree with you Jon. I think the clubs now follow the big money prizes. Winning the F.A Cup gets you some glory but perhaps it's not as financially rewarding as winning the league or ensuring you stay in the Premier League. big money has changed the game.

The Kentucky Derby is my favorite, followed closely by the World Series, The Super Bowl and the Stanley Cup Finals.

Isn't the F.A. cup wonderful for its unpredictability and revealing the occasional brilliance of the underdogs against the top dogs? Manchester City, who lead the Premier League by 16 points were beaten 1-0 on 20.02.2018 by Wigan Athletic who are 2 leagues down from them in League 1. Glorious for Wigan!

Probably the Summer Olympics, closely followed by Wimbledon.

Probably the lone Aussie here, but our Australian Rules Football Grand Final is a must. Also The Melbourne Cup, our big horse race that, as they say, stops a nation.

And can never forget Australia winning The America's Cup in 1983 after a total monopoly by the Americans for the previous gazillion years. Not that a lot of people here are into yachting, including myself, but Australians went nuts celebrating regardless.

So many sporting events to enjoy!

World Series 2004 when my Sox finally broke the Curse of the Bambino after 86 years. I was 24 at the time and told my parents “I have waited 86 years for this.”
