Subject: EDQ #12 - Making a Quiz List

Posted by: looney_tunes

Terry recently added this new feature, and I have seen a lot of quizzes that I feel would benefit from being compiled into a list, but whose authors do not seem to be aware of this option. So this latest addition to the series of Editors Discussing Quizzes is to draw your attention to a way to get more plays for some of your quizzes!

All authors can set up a collection of their quizzes, called a quiz list. (Gold members may include quizzes by other authors in the lists.) When a quiz is part of a quiz list, players will see a message at the end of the quiz, just before the place where they can rate it, telling them that it is part of a list, and providing a link to that list (or multiple links, if it is included in more than one list). This makes it much easier for them to find the related quizzes to one they enjoyed than is the case if they have to search through your profile's list of quizzes (which are in order of ranking or date online or number of plays) or trying to locate them in the category where they may be mixed with a lot of others. Some may even be in different categories, which could lead to them not being found.

To set up a quiz list, you need to go to Quiz Lists Home - it is the second entry on the dropdown menu for Quizzes. If you don't have dropdown menus operating, this link will take you there:

link http://www.funtrivia.com/lists/

On that screen, you will see a display of the most recently-created Quiz Lists, which you might like to explore to see how others have used the facility. On the left, there is a list of categories - if a list has been linked with a specific category, it will be shown when you click the link there. As you set up your list, it is worth including the category if it is relevant. Most of my lists are mixed categories, because the connecting link is something like Commission titles, not a common subject matter.

Near the top left is a link that says Create New List / Edit - if you click it, you will be taken to the page where you can set up and manage your quiz lists. (I placed a link to that page in my Favourites bar, but it isn't that hard to get back using these steps.) There you will see your quiz lists displayed, along with links to edit each, and make it visible to players or hidden (only useful if it is still preliminary - there's not much point having a list nobody can see).

Near the top of that page is a link that says Create a New Quiz List. It will take you to the place where you set up your list. From there, the steps are pretty clear. One hint is that it is much faster if you know the number of the quiz you want to add - selecting by name starts a search function that takes a while, and offers you multiple similar titles from which to choose, so you can be sure you have the right one. If you enter the quiz number, it just goes right in. To find its number, open it to play look at the top of the first screen. Under the title and the category, and above your player name, you will see the Quiz #, number of questions, and difficulty rating. Copy and paste is the fastest way to be sure you get it right! I find it convenient to have two windows open, so I can flick back and forth.

Once you have added all the quizzes you want, you can sort them into the desired order, then make the list visible. You can come back later to add or remove quizzes from the list as you wish.

When you have set up one or more quiz lists, you will see them listed on your profile page, on the tab that says Quiz Lists (currently the one on the right of the set of tabs to select Info, Badges, Mini, Quizzes, Crosswords, Challenges, Expert, Quiz Lists).

Ah, that makes a lot more sense. That's probably it.

The game does make it clear that you have to play them all - when you try to claim a list, it shows you the ones you haven't played, and the ones you still need to replay, quite clearly. The message at the bottom tells you how many short you are. Like Fifiona, I have been systematically working my way from the oldest ones to the newest ones, locating those for which I need to play no more than 2 or 3 to claim them. I'm only up to #204, according to the note I made so I will know where to start next time I get back to it. There are a lot more!

Could someone please tell me what I'm doing wrong. The title of my quiz list shows, but every time I copy the quiz ID and hit 'go', it tells me there are no entries.

Okay, I figured it out. It wasn't working for me with the Quiz ID that's why I couldn't get it to work.

These quiz lists are so fun! And a very clever invention to dramatically increase quiz play.

Just for my own personal frustration and lack of sleep, I set a goal to claim at least 100 quiz lists, with each list (not every quiz) by a different author.

It turns out this is hard to do. There are only in total about 95 authors with quiz lists, right now, that I have found so far. So as you said, we need more authors to participate. So I can meet my goal and bring about world peace.

After completing a quiz in a list, the link to the rest of the list is before the quiz rating submission. Is there a fluid way to rate a quiz, and still navigate to the quiz list?

Perhaps this question doesn't belong here, but why are the links to the quiz list and back to the homepage above the quiz rating section?

That question really needs to be addressed to Terry, who does the coding for all of this. If you post the question in the Feedback Forums, he may be able to either explain why not, or make the change when he has time.

What I do is rate the quiz first. Then if I really want to go explore those lists, I use the back arrow on my browser. Since I always play in Classic Mode, this takes me back to the rating/Quiz List screen, and I can then use those links.

Qrayx-- if you wouldn't mind posting that in the Author Q&A chatboard, Terry is much more likely to investigate it from there since it may get lost in this thread.

I think you make a valid point.

Just a note of etiquette, raised by a frustrated quiz list player who couldn't count a quiz list as complete and add it to their trophy cabinet because the list included some quizzes that were not yet online. It seems sensible to me that authors ideally should not add a new quiz to their online quiz list until it is actually online, rather than doing it when they set up the template. Even if the quiz goes online next day, someone may find it frustrating. And if it is a matter of weeks, the problem is magnified. If you are compiling a growing list, then when each new quiz goes online your routine of checking the kitchen to see if you can cook anything and thanking the editor can easily have an extra step added of including it in the appropriate quiz list.

When quiz lists first came out, I added two unfinished quizzes to two different lists. I didn't realise it made the list incomplete until a team mate sent me a message asking me to take them off so she could claim the list. I assumed they would be added when they were online, not before.

The mechanism wasn't clear at the start, but now it is obvious from feedback that an online list shows all listed quizzes, not just the ones that are online. If you want a quiz list to include all current and future quizzes that are planned, you need to keep it offline until they are all there. Once it is online, it is considerate to only add them when they go online.

Some authors want the new quiz to show as part of the list the moment it goes online. Unless they are hovering to see the instant it is accepted (an exercise in suspense and elevated blood pressure if ever there was one!), they need to add it on submission. That is their prerogative, of course. But you should be aware that it does create its own problems. I am happy to just add it as soon as I can - since I am rarely away from the site for more than 12 hours at a time, usually less, it doesn't create a major delay for me.

Just as a curiosity stemming from that... let's say you complete a list and it is added to your tally. Then, some time later, the author adds another quiz to that list... is your list then "undone" (for want of a better word) and you lose one off your tally?

Alternatively, if you don't lose the list but you play the newly added quiz, does the system allow you to claim the same list a second time?

Sorry, I've started on the red wine a little early today and the brain is going every which way at the moment... ahh red wine... my muse and inspiration

Once you have claimed a quiz list, you keep this list in your tally - even if other quizzes are added later on. This is something already confirmed by several editors and administrators.

Going back to a completed quiz list after new quizzes have been added, is a hypothesis I've not seen before. While you may of course feel incited to do so, I suppose it doesn't make sense to claim the same quiz list twice.

On the other hand, pollucci, which of the 384 quiz lists you've claimed would you be wanting to revisit?!

Help, I just made my first quiz list today, and I must have done something very wrong. With Agony's help I got my quiz on screen, but when I looked at it, all of the quizzes were just my introduction, and no questions.

Can someone help?

If it is your Horses etc list, it looks fine to me. The list shows the titles and intros, yes, but players can click on the title to play the quiz.

Everything is OK now, just a brain freeze on my part, but thanks. I didn't seem to have much self-confidence that I could do it correctly. Thanks for your answers, and for playing.
