Subject: Martin Landau - Passes at 89

Mission Impossible, Space 1999, Ed Wood, North by Northwest and many others show the range of Mr. Landau's abilities as an actor.

A few facts about Mr. Landau...he turned down the role of Mr. Spock in Star Trek. He once dated Marilyn Monroe. He began as a cartoonist but gave it up to become an actor and also taught acting.

An amazing man!

Rest in peace....

It is true Martin Landau passed up on the opportunity to play Spock. Martin Landau was actually very good friends with Leonard Nimoy. Both Mission: Impossible and Star Trek were Paramount productions that frequently filmed in the same lots, despite airing on different networks (Mission: Impossible on CBS, Star Trek on NBC). Mission: Impossible was the much higher rated show and ran for seven years, to Star Trek's three, but Martin Landau and his then-wife Barbara Bain (who played Cinnamon Carter on Mission: Impossible) both quit the show after the third season (spring 1969) in a contract dispute. Star Trek, coincidentally, was cancelled at that same time. When the fourth season of Mission: Impossible began in the fall of 1969, it was necessary to replace Martin Landau's "master of disguises" character. The Paramount executives created a new "master of disguises" character to replace Landau's Rollin Hand. The new character was called Paris the Great.

Who was the actor that played Paris? He had just been released from his recently cancelled show. His name was Leonard Nimoy.

Thank you. I apologize for not commenting on this thread earlier. I really liked Martin Landau. He was in two Twilight Zones: "Mr. Denton on Doomsday" and "The Jeopardy Room". He was a truly outstanding actor. Although he won his best supporting actor Oscar for his role as Bela Lugosi in Ed Wood, he had been nominated earlier for a role in Woody Allen's Crimes and Misdemeanors, a role I really liked. I've been very busy in my "real life", so I didn't run across this thread until today. Again I apologize for not responding in a more timely manner.

No worries, Brian. I've been putting my home back together after moving so I understand completely.

Space 1999 was great! Having a Metamorph on your side can be a great advantage!

Mission Impossible episodes were shown all day yesterday. The minute I heard the theme song, I was hooked.

Mr. Landau did so much, it will take some time to enjoy it all once again!

(except for the scary bits...Mr. L. could be rather imposing!)

Alfred Hitchcock had an episode with Martin Landau guest starring on last night. He could do the creepy types and the agonized types well.

Hello All: I, too, want to apologize for not responding on this thread earlier. (Guess I've been too busy playing and not enough time getting to know my fellow players). I was deeply saddened to hear of the passing of the superb Martin Landau. I did catch the "binge" weekend of Mission Impossible on Decades and, drug out my DVD of North by Northwest to watch Landau's chilling performance as one of Cary Grant's tormentors. Did many of you happen to see his wonderful rendering of Anthony Paglia's aging, Althemizer ridden father on Without a Trace? Martin Landau, you will be sorely missed! - Memorycat65

As Anthony's father, in Without a Trace, he showed even more of his abilities.

I haven't seen North by Northwest in years.

My priorities need updating!

Thanks, all!
