Here's a good and fun Video introduction to Versailles and in particular "How to Get Ahead at Versailles". It takes you through what sort of things you might have to do to get on.

It's beautiful, but who's going to clean all that brightwork.

They had plenty of servants, terraorca, to do all the menial jobs, and actually Louis and selected invitees used to rotate round several stately homes that he had. Marly was a favourite and they cleared out of Versailles for weeks at a time at certain times a year so that it could be cleaned. There were no toilets or bathrooms there except for Louis himself I believe. The place must have stunk especially with lots of dogs running round too. People stunk too but covered themselves with strong perfumes often having their own special one. It wasn't so glamorous in reality.

Sometimes 'stink' doesn't translate to images.

The best film I've seen for showing the desperation and often humiliation that people endured at Versailles as well as the wit that was so prized, the intrigue and plotting, is a French film called "Ridicule".

The Third Season of Versailles, the TV show, starts in the UK on 4th June. In the US it's on Ovation TV in October and Netflix usually pick it up some time after that. The third series involves the Man in the Iron Mask. I don't know where they are going with that but I feel it's not going to be historically accurate.

Versailles 3rd season is deviating from the true history somewhat. The history itself is interesting enough. I wish they had the courage to stick to it but I suppose they want to insert some dramatic events for an international audience without much interest in the history I suppose. It's becoming a bit more like Sherlock Homes and the Musketeers in parts.

Getting rather annoyed with some of the deviations from history in Versailles series 3. This week's episode had Philippe Duke of Orleans and his second wife Liselotte, having to be introduced to his own eldest daughter, Marie Louise, by Louis XIV, as he did not recognise her, implying that Philippe and Liselotte did not have any contact with her growing up. Totally false. She lived in the same homes as Philippe and Liselotte while growing up. Also in history she looked at lot like her father. In the TV series she looked nothing like him.
I can't understand why they portrayed it like that. Did they not know the history?

Last episode of the last series of Versailles airs in the UK in 2 days time. It was an extraordinary achievement but to get as many viewers as possible to cover the high costs per episode, they did invent some dramatic events and often dealt with rumours as if they were factual. However the fact that they were able to do it at all was an achievement. Haiving red the accounts that people wrote at the time I'm aware of the deviations from character and events. However it was quite addictive. The BBC seemed to become embarrassed about this third series as it was airing the day after Poldark episodes but all the publicity was given to Poldark. Versailles actually beat Poldark this year in the final of the Radio Times' viewers vote on Champion Drama on 28 July but the Radio Times hasn't yet publicised this as far as I can see.

Here are some outrageous clothes from England in the same period as Versailles. Wouldn't it be fun to wear these clothes again? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wHiJkLmclkA
