Subject: Music Chart Challenge - COMPLETE

Posted by: kyleisalive
Date: Jul 24 18

Can you hear that? It's the sound of music! NEW music! OLD music! Some sort of music!

We're going to celebrate music with this challenge, and while it may be a bit of a niche challenge, there are opportunities for classic music listeners to get in on the fun. There should be some international appeal despite the region specificity.

Anyways, check the date. Whatever day it is (where you are, not at the time of the challenge posting), look back at that date on the Billboard 200 Chart (here's a link: link https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Billboard_200_number-one_albums ). Whatever artists had number one albums on that date are eligible as topics for your quiz.

Let's say the date is July 15. That means that you can look back at July 15th on those charts-- any years-- and the artists associated with that day can be topics you use for your quiz. So for July 15, you're already looking at The Beatles, Donna Summer, Janet Jackson, the Spice Girls, Avril Lavigne, The Black Eyed Peas, and more! And it could change every week!

We need ten quizzes to complete the challenge, and they should all be about different bands/artists.

Completed Quizzes
The Fat of the Land - Kankurette
Candles in the Rain - Pollucci19
Making Hits at Cosmo's Factory - Pollucci19
"Evanescence" by Evanescence - AcrylicInk
Once They Were King's - Pollucci19
In the Out Door - 1nn1
Princely Purple Rain - ClaudiaCat
Below the Standard - Pollucci19
Hell Freezes Over - Pollucci19
Frank Ocean - Daaanieeel

So today is July 24.

Today, you would be able to look back at July 24 and you could write a quiz about artists like:
Blink-182
Beyonce
Eminem
U2
Whitney Houston
The Rolling Stones
Frank Sinatra
Andy Williams

...and more.

FT time, or my local time? It's already July 25 here.

If I decide to use today, but don't have time to write the quiz until the weekend, do I post here now the name of the artist so it is clear that they match the date? Or do I just note it in the Note to Editors box? Or do I have to set up the template on the relevant day?

Or don't you really care, as long as we get ten different subjects?

So really what is required is to pick a date say June 29. Find the number one album on that date on ten different years so you get a melange of artists over the ten questions.

I'm in. I choose June 29 as it is an auspicious date for me.

As a music editor, please could I ask that all challengers identify the challenge in the Editor's box when they submit. This will make it easier for agony and I to edit if we know the challenge upfront - Thanks
Regards, Nick

The date you create the quiz should be the date that you're looking back on, so if it's currently July 25 where you live, the topics you're eligible to write about should be under that date on the charts listed at the link above.

Basically, if you want to write for an upcoming date, then when that date comes along, post who you're writing about (and the year, for ease of confirmation) and I'll keep track.

Oooh, a music quiz! So can it be a different artist for each question? Like if I did a '90s quiz with one artist / album for each year?

We need ten quizzes to complete the challenge, and they should all be about different bands/artists.

If you decide to make the quiz about ten different bands/artists, keep in mind that this will block them out for use in any other quizzes for this challenge (though we only need ten). You can take Pollucci's route and write about Woodstock (which is a clever choice; can't wait to see it) or you could do a single artist and look at their entire body of work with the #1 album as a launching point.

Does it have to be Billboard or can it be UK charts?

And if anyone's interested, the bands / albums I've picked are:
MC Hammer
Van Halen
Billy Ray Cyrus
U2
The Lion King OST, so Elton John, I guess
Pocahontas OST
Nas
The Prodigy
Armageddon OST
Limp Bizkit

I think there might be a problem because there are two OSTs in there.

For this particular challenge, it must be Billboard.

This week in 2006 the compilation album Now 22 was top of the chart. Can I pick a band off that album or is that cheating a little?

That's a bit of a cheat, I think as it wasn't their album. Unless you wrote a quiz about 'Now 22'.

Fair enough!

This is such an easy prompt but I found it difficult to select something as lots of artists already have a bunch of quizzes on FT. It looks like the "Top Gun" soundtrack will be good to submit September 20th and no one has written a quiz on that yet. Now I just need to submit it within a week...
