Untimed (did not finish the course by Feb 26): apathy100

Please note regarding the lists: I am compiling the quiz lists at the time I evaluate the leg times. This means there can be quizzes on them that are not yet online and that will prevent you from claiming that list right away. This issue will fix itself - editors will put the quiz online soon. Please don't send the authors messages for this; they can't speed up their edits either!

Regarding leg times / overall times: Even with a time bonus, leg times cannot go below 0:01 and thus total times cannot be less than the number of legs in minutes. However, if a time would become less than that, I will keep the remainder of the bonus in mind and apply it once the actual timers give me the chance to do so.

Leg 1 - INTRODUCTIONS ARE IN ORDER

This task was essentially the same on both sides, with only the category table different:

Have a look at your FT user name, one character at a time, starting from the left. Look up the category for that character in the following table and write it down as one of your options. Then take the next letter, look for its category and so on, until you either have exhausted your entire name or have three different categories available. Then write a quiz in one of those categories. If you should be unlucky enough to have only a single category available to you after exhausting your entire name, you can alternatively do Video Games.

(Wesley's table)
A or D: TELEVISION
B or E: WORLD
C or Z: LITERATURE
F or V: ANIMALS
G or N: ENTERTAINMENT
H or J: GEOGRAPHY
I or K: HISTORY
L or S: CELEBRITIES
M or P: HOBBIES
O or Q: HUMANITIES
R or 1: MOVIES
U or 2: MUSIC
T or 5: SCI/TECH
W or 8: BRAIN TEASERS
X or Y: FOR CHILDREN
3 or 6: PEOPLE
4 or 9: RELIGION
7 or 0: SPORTS

(1nn1's table)
Animals: D, U
Brain Teasers: K, ZERO
Celebrities: C, V
Entertainment: M, Z
General: Q, 5
Geography: E. T
History: R, 4
Hobbies: F, 6
Humanities: L, Y
Literature: B, 9
Movies: G, 2
Music: O, 8
People: P, X
Religion: I, 3
Sci/Tech: J, 7
Sport: N, 1
TV: A, W
World: H, S

Two players obviously got lucky on this one with a prepared quiz, resulting in a really incredible time. On the other hand, we've seen two qualifying submissions above the timer cap, so the field is already across the whole spectrum after just one game.

Of course further tasks will be far less likely to be easily completed with a ready-made entry...

After the first leg was just a warmup, the second one ramped up the difficulty by quite a bit - but that didn't seem to deter our authors who churned out a full 29 quizzes, among them an Editor's Choice for pollucci19's "A Bohemian Clint Eastwood Rhapsody" - unfortunately for the team, the time bonus didn't help them as there was still a faster entry.

Being late in this task and writing speculatively seems to have helped a few players, especially angikar, whose entry clocked in at the minimum possible time. Just be aware this won't always work and there might be tasks where being early is the better choice!

Wes asked:

TASK 2 - SONG FOR THE ASKING

I'll take this one literally. Pick a well-known song. Write any ten-question quiz you want in any format you want (match, photo, multiple choice, T/F or fill the blank), but all ten questions must be easily sung to the tune of that song - and somehow your title and/or intro should reference that.

So if you picked "Old Mc Donald Had a Farm" for your song, you could do "Old Mc Donald had a Chemistry Lab" and write your first question to be something like "Each Element a symbol has, which one bears the O?"

You can set all ten questions to the same part of the tune or combine them into an ongoing rendition of the song. You do not have to rhyme with the original nor does the text need any resemblance to it - all that counts is the meter/rhythm, making the melody flow. Oh, and please make it an actual SONG, with a well discernible melody even someone with little musical talent could recognize and hum. Sorry, rap fans. And I probably won't have to say that, but any lyrics quiz is ineligible for this task, unless you make it a "Lyrics that could also be sung to the tune of..." one!

Please post your chosen song title, along with a link to a video of a performance if possible, in the thread. You can do that AFTER you submit your quiz, there's no need to spend any precious time on finding the video.

Personal style points (but absolutely no time bonus) will be awarded to anyone setting a quiz to a tune from the musical "CATS" :)

By the way, this is the first of two tasks that is a kind of throwback to the second Sprint. (Smart players will now wildly guess and prepare about 20 different quizzes to get a free instant submit on the second one... good luck)

13 quizzes resulted from this stipulation:

TASK 2 - SONG FOR THE TAKING

Are you tired of being sent to strange categories you'd rather not touch again? That's great, because this time you can write about anything you want. Any category or subject you prefer, as long as it's a multiple choice quiz. (No True/False, Yes/No or FITB answers permitted) However At Fun Trivia we value brevity and variety in QUESTIONS asked in a quiz. Therefore your quiz must meet the following requirements:

1. Each question must be no longer than two hundred characters in length including spaces and punctuation

AND

2. At least six questions must contain every letter (26) of the alphabet

AND

3. Your title must be either

a) Three word minimum in length with all words starting with the same letter with no repeat words, nor interjections nor articles (eg "Eh!"; "But" "A" "The" etc)
OR
b) Three Word maximum and the title must start and finish with the same letter with no interjections nor articles (eg "Eh!"; "But" "A" "The" etc)

Use of a word processor to write your questions is highly recommended.

Good luck!

There isn't a Race or Sprint where players won't sooner or later be sent to the author challenge titles. That time was leg 3 (and will it be the last time for this Sprint?). There was however a twist - you got a much easier task if you picked a challenge posted by a teammate. That in turn got some players scrambling for support and over 60 new, creative challenges got posted. Still, some were stuck using a generic challenge.

Wes' variant:

TASK 3 - IT WAS THE BEST OF TEAMS...

I really hope you're in a good team. Because you'll need one for this challenge.

Check out http://www.funtrivia.com/heroes/records.cfm - the Team Heroes Record Book. I hope you can find your name there a few times, because you can pick any of the subcategories that has your name on it. Write a quiz in any of those subcategories, using an author challenge title. You're good at it, so this should be easy.

If you scrolled down all the way and didn't find at least six choices, you'll get to pad out your possibilities from the bottom of the list (i.e. the ones your team has placed lowest in, regardless of whether you won them) until you have six. Anywhere within one of those subcategories is fine, so if you for example pick Celebrities T-Z, you could write an Elizabeth Taylor quiz in her subcategory.

Now you have two options:

(A) The title you pick was posted by one of your teammates. In this case, you can write your quiz in any format you want AND you will receive a 45 minute bonus.
(B) You pick a title that was by someone not in your team. In that case, you need either a 15 question multiple choice quiz or a photo quiz. And you won't get a time bonus either.

What? (B) doesn't appeal to you? Well, you could always ask your teammates (on your team messageboard) to quickly submit a few titles for you to use. But you may NOT tell them what it's for beyond that you need it for the Sprint and they better make it quick... We won't want to see any requesting of "suitable" titles! Yes, we'll check.

Oh, you're not in a team at all despite the warning in the game thread? Well, then it's obviously (B) and you'll need to write in any subcategory on the site that has exactly ONE quiz in it. Not our fault.

yielded a total of 10 quizzes:

http://www.funtrivia.com/special_lists.cfm?quizlist=1385

and 1nn1's version:

TASK 3 - IT WAS THE BEST OF TEAMS...

We really hope you're in a good team. Because you'll need one for this challenge.

Go to the Team Heroes page and find your team record book.

link http://www.funtrivia.com/heroes/ (opposite the yellow box with team scores)

Using any subcategories listed, (OTHER than any YOU or your SPRINT partner(s) hold the record for that subcategory), write a quiz using an Author Challenge title.

Now you have two options:

(A) The title you pick was posted by one of your teammates. In this case, you can write your quiz in any format you want AND you will receive a 45 minute bonus.

Oh, you're not in a team at all despite the warning in the game thread? Well, then it's you are restricted to (B) and you'll need to go to the Expert Game page and pick one of the upcoming topics as your quiz category then pick an Author Challenge title to head your quiz. Not our fault.

In a competition like the Sprint, reading and understanding the task correctly is an important skill and while a few authors already got burned in this department before, leg 4 raised this to new heights with at least four authors having to go back for seconds and one being able to modify their entry for compliance after submissions (at the cost of a 30-minute correction note).

The players came up with some quite creative uses of awkward titles while composing this round's entries!

Wes' variant:

TASK 4 - OUT OF PLACE

There are titles that are an easy match to their quiz and some that aren't. Let's have a spin with the latter type:

Take the remainder of your level divided by 20 (For example level 98 would be 18, level 160 would be 0, treated as 20).

Now count off categories from the top, 1 = Animals, 2 = Brain Teasers, ..., 19 = Video Games, 0/20 = World

Within that category, pick any bottom level subcategory you want (one that has no further subcategories), then use that subcategory name as your quiz title. The new quiz must be in one of the following categories, depending on where the title came from:

If your original title was in Animals, Sci/Tech, Geography or History, you may write in Movies, Humanities or Entertainment.
If your original title was in Movies, Literature, Television or Entertainment, you may write in World, Sports or Sci/Tech.
If your original title was in Brain Teasers, Music, General or For Children, you may write in Literature, People or History.
If your original title was in Sports, Video Games, Hobbies or World, you may write in Television, Religion or Animals.
If your original title was in Celebrities, People, Religion or Humanities, you may write in Music, Hobbies or Geography.

Yes, this table was optimized for evilosity (TM). Have fun looking for a good match - they are certainly out there!

yielded the following 15 quizzes:

http://www.funtrivia.com/special_lists.cfm?quizlist=1388

1nn1's version:

TASK 4 - OUT OF PLACE

There are titles that are an easy match to their quiz and some that are not so easy but the potential is huge. Let's investigate with the latter type:

From the last letter of your FT username, go to the FT category whose first letter follows your designated letter, alphabetically (If your user name ends with a number use the first letter that spells out that number)

(eg Kyleisalive = E. Go to For Children
eg 1nn1 = 1 = One = O. Go to People)

Within that category, pick any bottom level subcategory you want (one that has no further subcategories), then use that subcategory name as your quiz title.

Note.
1. There is one exclusion. You cannot use a sub-category called "Something in Common" (which features in several diffent categories) as the title for your quiz
2. We strongly advise you to double check you are using a sub-category with no other sub-categories beneath it as use of such a sub-cat will disqualify your quiz. (9and you know we are going to check)

The new quiz must be in one of the following categories, depending on where the title came from:

If your original title was in Animals, Entertainment, Movies or Television, you may write in General, Religion or Sports.

If your original title was in General, History, Literature or Sports, you may write in Celebrities, Hobbies, or Sci/Tech.

If your original title was in Celebrities, For Children, Geography or Sci/Tech, you may write in History, Literature or Hobbies

If your original title was in Video Games, Brain Teasers, Religion or Music you may write in Animals, Geography, or World

If your original title was in Hobbies, Humanities, People, or World you may write in Movies, Music or Entertainment

The title of the chosen quiz must reflect the content. The link between the title and content cannot be tenuous nor contrived. The intro should be used to link title and content.

TASK 5 - UPGRADE ME

Who says we can't reward authors for things they achieved outside the field of quiz-writing? Who says we shouldn't use new features to base a task on? The fifth task was definitely much easier if you embraced those upgradeable badges and gave it some effort in the past...

Wes' version was the more specific of the two in terms of what you could do - resulting in 9 quizzes:

Have a look at your upgradeable challenges (link http://www.funtrivia.com/challenges.cfm?type=upgrades&id=0 should help). Find The Everything Challenge (8/Diamond) and look at its tier. Got it? Now look at the following table and see which category or categories you just earned the opportunity to write a MATCH quiz in. Yes, we're rewarding those who have played well.

Tier 7 - Any subcategory of your choice currently having a two-digit number of quizzes (i.e. between 10 and 99).
Tier 6 - Any subcategory you have an Expert Champion win in. Or anywhere in World or Geography in case you have none of those.
Tier 5 - Any subcategory whose name includes the word "Other", "Mixed" or Miscellaneous"
Tier 4 - Thematic Fun or anywhere within Topics For Kids.
Tier 3 - The exact same subcategory as one of your three best ranked quizzes.
Tier 2 - Religion outside "The Bible" or Humanities outside English
Tier 1 - Anywhere in Sports except Baseball, American Football or Basketball.
Tier 0 (Not owned) - Any Movies subcategory with EXACTLY TWO (2) quizzes in it.

If you are particularly unhappy with your options, you can instead use the tier you have on Obscure Knowledge (5/Sapphire), but you'll have to instead write a MULTIPLE CHOICE quiz (of any length) or a 15-question match quiz..

And if that doesn't suit you either, your third option is to use Achievement: Easy Game (1/Amethyst) - you do have a few tiers in THAT, don't you? However, you'll have to create a PHOTO QUIZ. If you do not have photo quiz privileges (and only then), write a 15-question or longer multiple choice quiz instead.

Your quiz MUST go online in the subcategory you submitted it in. If it's moved by the editor, even to another qualifying subcategory, you're noncompliant. So inform your editor about it having to stay where you sent it :) (This is essentially so you won't give anything away. "Sprint 3 Task 5 - Must stay in this subcategory" or a similar editor note won't spoil the task for any editor working it)

http://www.funtrivia.com/special_lists.cfm?quizlist=1402

1nn1's more encompassing version yielded 14 quizzes:

Have a look at your upgradeable challenges. Find the MIND MELT Achievement Badge and look at its tier. Find it? Now look at the following table and see which category or categories you just earned the opportunity to write a MATCH quiz in. Yes, we're rewarding those who have played well.

Tier 7 - Any category except those categories that start with a "G", "H", or "M". (13 Categories) Additionally these three letters cannot appear in the title of your quiz.

Tier 6 - Any category that starts with a G, H, M (7 categories). Additionally the title must contain the first letter of the chosen category.

Tier 5 - Television, Movies or Entertainment. Additionally the first letter of the category chosen cannot appear in the title of your quiz

Tier 4 - Geography or History or World. Note whichever category is chosen cannot use the category name in the title of the quiz AND the names of the other two categories cannot appear anywhere in the quiz. Additionally the title must contain at least one letter that is common to all three words: "Geography", "History" and "World"

Tier 3 - Celebrities Or People. Subcategory exclusions. Cannot use "Celebrities Mixture" NOR "Mixed People" or any subsequent sub-category that sits underneath these sub-cats. Additionally a maximum of only one (1) letter "E" may be used in the title.

Tier 2 - Hobbies. Subcategory Food and Drink list. Criteria: NOT "Mixed Food and Drink" subcategory. Additionally No "Food" nor "Drink" can appear in the title but there must be at least one "F" and/or "D" used in the quiz title OR Religion in any subcategory except Christianity or The Bible (this includes ALL subsequent sub-categories that sit under these two 'parent' subcategories). Additionally your title must contain at least five distinct letters from R, E, L, I, G, O, N.

Tier 1 - Music, Classical or Modern. Write a quiz under one of the following sub-categories: Classical Music, Rock and Roll, or Musical Instruments. Writing in sub-categories below these 'parent' sub-categories is permitted. Additionally the word MUSIC or any derivative of the word cannot appear in the title but the title must contain each of the letters M, U, S, I, C

Not owned - Animals/subcategory Invertebrates or Humanities subcategory Architecture or Literature subcategory Literature Before 1900. Quizzes that sit in subcategories underneath these "parent" sub-categories are permitted. Quiz title must start with the letter of chosen category but also contain the first letters of the other two categories.

One other important stipulation for all tiers. The submitting author cannot write in a category that they have already submitted for the previous four tasks (Supplementary quizzes are excluded from this stipulation).

If you are particularly unhappy with your options, you can instead, use DAILY GAME Badge tier, but you'll have to instead write a MATCH quiz with 15 questions or a MULTIPLE CHOICE quiz with ALL questions MC.

And if that doesn't suit you either, your third option is to use the MIXED GAME tier, but create a PHOTO QUIZ. If you do not have photo quiz privileges, write a 15-question quiz instead with no T/F, Y/N or FITB questions permitted.

If in a duo or trio, the submitting author's tier level must be used.

http://www.funtrivia.com/special_lists.cfm?quizlist=1403

Interestingly, most authors chose the hardest badge even if their tier or lack thereof meant they were relegated to an awkward category choice.

TASK 6 - IT'S PROBABLY NOT 42

You may have guessed it: If we have a throwback to the "weird restrictions on how to write questions" theme, the other one is about the answers. Good guess. I hope you already set up a few templates according to some ideas you may have had, because they'll make great quizzes. They won't qualify for this round however.

(Yes, evilness abounds. We can't have people guessing the task and writing ahead every single round.)

As often happens with freeform tasks, the two variants were very different - Wes' one was probably the easier choice and involved less bookkeeping:

Crossword authors may particularly like what's coming:

What you need for this task is a MATCH or FILL THE BLANK quiz. No Multiple Choice allowed, for obvious reasons: Your answers must be single words, all ten of the same length and you must match TWO letters in all ten of those answers (your choice as to which ones - could be first two, last two, second and seventh... it doesn't matter). As an example, "Friend", "Ground" and "Traded" would work together (based on 2nd and 6th letter). Oh, and those ten answers of course need to be all different. (Well, I guess if you REALLY wanted to do so, you could use Multiple Choice. Good luck finding 40 qualifying words in that case...)

The category of your quiz is entirely up to you except that you can NOT use any category you currently (as of starting your writing) have an unfinished / unsubmitted quiz in. (Testing or spare templates don't count against you; neither does any team quiz you happen to be managing). You could of course submit something to get it out of the way first if you REALLY want its category, but oh, that impact on the timer... and of course, changing the category of an unfinished template now won't help you. In the highly unlikely case you're working on so many things that you'd have fewer than four categories left to choose from, you can add Video Games, Sports, Religion and Celebrities to your allowable list to give you at least a few options.

13 quizzes were created under this option. Matching the first two letters was the most common choice, but there was also a clever "make my job easy" variant by ending on -ER and writing about jobs. They tend to have that ending....

http://www.funtrivia.com/special_lists.cfm?quizlist=1405

Predictably, no one went for the alluded multiple choice variant that would have required 40 words matching the pattern. Anyone want to try this outside the Sprint?

1nn1's version was really complex and for those not immediately familiar with Scrabble values, it probably meant some time spent with arithmetic...

In fact it is 360. Remember that number. It is important.
In Fun Trivia, you have seen how crosswords and quizzes fit together. Now you are about to see how Scrabble and quizzes fit together.

In Task 2 we appreciated brevity and conciseness in the questions. In this task you need to exercise a little brevity in your ANSWERS.

You are required to write a 10 question, ALL multiple choice quiz in any category except Humanities, General/Mixed and General/Alphabetics(Letting you construct the required quiz in these categories would make it too easy).
The total of 40 answer options (4x10 questions) must not exceed 360 characters in total, but they must have a minimum of 360 Scrabble points.
For each answer block (4 answers) you are constrained by the number of each letters in a Standard English Scrabble box (see below).

That's an average of nine characters and nine scrabble points per answer.
Spaces, hyphens and apostrophes are free because I am feeling generous (ie Not counted as characters).
Numbers are OK but you must count a blank tile per numeral and you only get two in a box (ie Each numeral evokes a character count but is worth zero scrabble points).

The hundred tiles in a scrabble box are
2 blank tiles (scoring 0 points)
1 point: E ×12, A ×9, I ×9, O ×8, N ×6, R ×6, T ×6, L ×4, S ×4, U ×4
2 points: D ×4, G ×3
3 points: B ×2, C ×2, M ×2, P ×2
4 points: F ×2, H ×2, V ×2, W ×2, Y ×2
5 points: K ×1
8 points: J ×1, X ×1
10 points: Q ×1, Z ×1

So in your 10 question all multiple choice quiz you require three items:
1. The four answer options must be 36 characters or less
2. The four answer options must be a minimum of 36 scrabble points
3. You can only use the letters in the 100 tile scrabble box in your 4 answer options per question

Let me show you an example as it is a bit tricky:
Say your answers for a certain question are:
LETTERS
CONVENTION
ELEVEN
QUIZZICAL

So LETTERS has 7 characters and counts for 8 scrabble points (Need average of 9 characters or less and 9 scrabble points of more per answer)
CONVENTION has 10 characters and 15 points. That's a running total of 17 and 23 - doing OK
ELEVEN gives 6 and 9. Three question total = 23 and 32 - On track. (Note if you wrote ELEVEN as "11" you would save 5 characters but lose 9 scrabble points)
QUIZZICAL gives 9 and 38 that makes 32 characters and 80 Points. Hang on a sec. We have used two "Z"s - there is only one in a scrabble box. Therefore cannot use this answer block.
However if we could use QUIZ instead of QUIZZICAL we would have 27 characters and 63 points AND we only used one Z! Therefore answers meet criteria (Note: as well as writing 40 answers you need to write a quiz as well.)
Repeat x9

You will receive a 75 minute bonus for EITHER a photo quiz OR a 15 Question Quiz (still only 360 characters maximum, but Scrabble score must be minimum of 540 for a 15 question quiz) OR (Your character count for the quiz is 270 or less [90 less than 360] AND your scrabble score total is 450 minimum [90 more than 360].
AND if you you use all the letters in "SCRABBLE" in your 36 character or less title, you will receive an additional two minute credit*.
* 36 character title needed only if claiming the additional two minute credit.

Maximum of one (1) 75 minute credit plus or minus an additional two minute credit as described.

The intended easy way out of this was to simply use all nine-letter answers. 360 letters add up to at least 360 points, so you only need to care about not using too many of the rarer ones. The sneaky easy way out (and one that nabbed the bonus almost for free) was to just set up one good set of four answers (more than 45 points and fewer than 27 letters) and then use it on all ten questions. A few players used that to get a really good time - 12 quizzes on this side of which 6 grabbed the bonus.

TASK 7 - HAPPY BIRTHDAY

Can't have a Sprint without at least one look at the commissions, can we? What, however, if we don't just let you add to a commission but ask you to pick one specific quiz from the past and build on it? That's what happened this round.

This version by Wes:

Take your birthday (the date), then go to the list of commissions and pick the one numbered accordingly. Now take the month, subtract it from 14 (e.g. March would yield 11), and go down the list, stopping at the quiz in that position. Got it? Great, now take that title, change ONE WORD to another word that STARTS WITH THE SAME LETTER and write a MUTIPLE CHOICE quiz using that. If the original title was only one word, you must change it to a word matches both the first letter AND the number of letters. Any category is fair game for this task.

If you feel you absolutely can't work with that title, you can move up or down the commission list (wrapping around to beginning or end if applicable), but each place moved will incur a 10-minute penalty. So if you move two places, you'll take 20 minutes on top of your writing time.

Too easy? Good. Because I also want you to add a condition of your own. This can be related, in any way you want, to how you write the questions, answers or info. As long as it's at least a mild challenge (so you can't choose "all answers must be between 2 and 45 letters long" :) ) and clearly is visible in your final work as a constraint, anything goes.

If you want a time bonus, you can pick one up in this round as a birthday present: Every question above 10 you submit will give you an 8 minute credit; you can do so via writing a longer quiz (15 or 20 questions) and/or submitting single questions that fit your quiz in both category and title. If you want to use singles, they must be submitted BEFORE your quiz so that we can get a proper timing. Of course any additional material will also have to fit your self-imposed criteria.

If you do submit single questions, please also post the questions only (not the answers or info) in the task thread so I can easily check how many you sent.

12 quizzes resulted here, many of them with very interesting and creative constraints: http://www.funtrivia.com/special_lists.cfm?quizlist=1410

1nn1's task looked more intimidating but actually left a lot more choice:

Take your birthday* (the date), then add 20, (Number should be between 21-51) then go to the list of commissions and pick the one numbered accordingly. Now take the month** of your birthday in numbers (Jan = 1, Feb = 2 etc), and go down the list, stopping at the quiz in your birthday month position. OK, now do one of the following OPTIONS:

OPTION 1. Replace either one noun or one verb to that title (but not both) with another word starting with the same letter and write in any odd numbered category (This excludes the current category of the quiz - it cannot be in the same category as the original quiz).
OR
OPTION 2. Add either "No" or "Not" or "Non-" or "Un-/Im-/In-" to any appropriate noun in the title creating a new title with a totally opposite meaning to the original and write a quiz in any category but the original one.
OR
OPTION 3 Write a quiz in EXACTLY the same category subcategory as the original quiz with a new title BUT using the first letter only of each word in the original title as the first letter of each word in the new title of your quiz (Eg Six Little Soldiers changes to Seven Latvian Sailors meets criteria). Note with this option the EXACT subcategory is just that - no allowance for movement into a subsequent or lower sub-cat that sits underneath the original sub-category).
Or
OPTION 4. From the chosen quiz title make a new title using the same number of words and the same numbers of letters in each title word but one of the words must be an ANAGRAM of one of the original words in the title. Write the new quiz in any even numbered quiz category except the original category. eg a title of "Israel Teardrops" becomes "Serial Teardrops" Or "Israel Predators" or indeed for bragging rights - "Serial Predators" (For illustrative purposes only. Please do not right about predators unless in the Animals category)
or
OPTION 5. Add or subtract one word only, to or from the original title and write a quiz in the corresponding category as follows: Whatever your quiz category number is in alphabetical order in Reference 1, count the same number from the bottom to find the corresponding category (eg "The Road Not Taken" in Literature is the 11th category from the top of the list. Humanities is 11th from the bottom. Possible Title: "The Road Sign Not Taken").

The Quiz must be a MULTIPLE CHOICE quiz only, using one of the options above.
The title of the quiz must reflect the content of the quiz. Tenuous links between title and content will incur the wrath of the taskmasters and a repeat, more relevant quiz will be necessary to appease them. (You can, however, consider your failed quiz as a supplementary quiz)

If you do not like this title, count off exactly 12 places below the allocated quiz and determine if this second quiz is a better title. You can continue going down the list stopping at every 12th one until the list is exhausted, or you find a suitable title.
IF you do not like any of the titles you have accessed in this Commission, you can go to the Commission exactly 20 before the allocated one, and repeat the process. However, this will incur a 15 minute penalty (as well as the time taken to reach this point empty handed).

Exclusions
1. If you (submitting author) has contributed a quiz to this category when the Commission was being run, you cannot submit a quiz in the same category as your original commission quiz. This may reduce the number of options but you have peenty more.
2. If you or your partners are doing both tasks, the second quiz cannot be in the same as the first quiz.

Add-ons:
If you want a time bonus, you can pick one up in this round as a birthday present: Every question above 10 you submit will give you an 8 minute credit; you can do so via writing a longer quiz (15 or 20 questions) and/or submitting single questions that fit your quiz in both category and title. If you want to use singles, they must be submitted BEFORE your quiz so that we can get a proper timing.

7 quizzes (with one to come, apathy100 needs to finish his entry) resulted from this: http://www.funtrivia.com/special_lists.cfm?quizlist=1411

Few players made use of the bonus - which was understandable as 8 minutes per question is equivalent to a 1 hour 20 minute time on a full quiz, quite the feat when you're stuck with multiple choice.

In an interesting observation, this task was quite lopsided in quiz numbers with many players favoring Wes' task even though 1nn1's had more options and almost any quiz that would have qualified Wes' side would also have fit here - either having five very different choices was a bit overwhelming or the later commissions yielded more difficult titles to work with.

TASK 8 - RACY!

Wes' version:

Have a look at http://www.funtrivia.com/bb.cfm?action=details&qnid=24986&boardid=2222222 - all those completed challenges. Quite a lot, isn't it? However, what you need is almost at the top, namely the four instances of the Amazing Trivia Race.

Make a post in the clue thread now. Then look at the HOUR of that post (ignore the minutes entirely).

If it is 1 to 6 am, you will be heading to the Race I, if it's 7 am to 12 pm, Race II, if it's 1 to 6 pm, Race III and from 7 pm to 12 am, Race IV.
Within that race, 1 or 7 will send you to the first leg, 2 or 8 to the second, 3 or 9 to the third, 4 or 10 to the fourth, 5 or 11 to the fifth and 6 or 12 to the sixth.

Now all you need to do is pick any one task within that leg and complete its requirement. If you select a Detour, you must pick the side with FEWER quizzes (your choice if tied). Please copy and paste the task stipulation you are doing into the thread so that we can easily check the quiz!

Oh, and just in case you get lucky and pull a leg where one of the tasks is "write a quiz, any quiz"... you can do that one, but it would have to be a photo quiz.

As 1nn1 offered a 75 minute bonus for doing an extra complicated task in round 6, I'll offer one this go: If you want it, you'll need to check the three other races (the ones you haven't mandatorily been sent to). If you manage to write a quiz that fills one of the tasks in each of the four races AND none of those four tasks would automatically cause you to complete one of the other three, you can grab this bonus. Post all four task descriptions in that case.

As an example for what would work and what wouldn't:

Task A: "Write in Geography or World". Task B: "Write in any category starting with the letter G". This is viable - the combination is more restrictive than either of the two alone.

Task C: "Write about any single stage musical". Task D: "Write a Humanities quiz". No way - any quiz about a Musical would automatically be Humanities, so C automatically fulfills D.

If you have read all of this before making your post, you could of course wait for the task you want... but your time is ticking.

Joepetz and zorba_scank have managed to complete this very difficult bonus, among the 10 quizzes who chose this side:

http://www.funtrivia.com/special_lists.cfm?quizlist=1448

1nn1's version:

Have a look at http://www.funtrivia.com/bb.cfm?action=details&qnid=24986&boardid=2222222 - all those completed challenges. Quite a lot, aren't there? However, what you need is almost at the top, namely the four instances of the Amazing Race.

To pick which of the four races is to be used by you, the submitting author, for this task, determine what part of the country you live in and using a code of
North = 1
South = 2
East = 3
West = 4
this determines which Amazing Race to go to. If you are unsure you can always send a PM to the taskmaster who will decide for you in due course. Please include your location and country in the PM.

Next go to your World Quiz Achievement badge. Whatever tier you are on go to that leg number. (Each leg usually has four clues)
If on Tier 7, you can go to any leg.
If you do not have this badge choose Amazing Race 1, Leg 1 regardless of what number you obtained in the Country habitat location above. This leg will give you three options (clues) if you do not
have this badge.

Now, for those with Tier 1 and above, all you need to do is pick any one clue within that leg and complete its requirements. The clue must be executed as described. There are no exceptions. If you select a Detour, you must pick the side with LESS quizzes (your choice if tied).

Exclusions
If you wrote a quiz for for a particular clue within a leg in the AR, you cannot undertake the same clue in the Sprint.
If you are doing both sides of the Sprint you cannot undertake the same clue as you did to meet Wes' requirements.
Any clue which mentions Harry Potter is off-limits to Sprinters.

9 Sprinters completed this task:

http://www.funtrivia.com/special_lists.cfm?quizlist=1449

Angikar pulled the lucky jackpot of an "any quiz will do" task on 1nn1's side and was able to submit a waiting entry. Thus, we have these lap times:

1. angikar 0:06 h
2. Pretty Windy 0:17 h (score by zorba_scank)
3. Shadowmyst2004 0:37 h

TASK 9 - CATCHING UP

Wes' task:

So, this is the last round. That means it's your last opportunity to catch that pesky player before you in the ranking. Check out their profile. (If a team is ranked directly in front of you, you can pick any of its members and if you're already in first, wrap around to last place and try to lap them). The "not classified" (N/C) players do count in the positions shown. Just look at whoever is in the line above you, that's the person/team you need.

Now check their quizzes online - only the first page (top 60) counts. If you are chasing a team, you're even further restricted: In a two-player team (Gingham), you need to pick from the top 30 and for a three-player team (any of the others), you are looking at the top 20 only. So regardless of what's happening in front of you, you have exactly 60 quizzes to choose from. Pick any one of those quizzes, then change, add or delete ONE OR TWO LETTERS in the title to come up with a new title you want to write.

You can use two different operations for the two changes you can make - so "Mouse" could become "Rose" (one change and one deletion) or "Muses" (one deletion, one addition), but not "Horus". You're also not confined to making the changes to the same word. "We Can" could become "He-Man". And, as you see, you can change punctuation any way you want to.

If you want to tweak digits as your allotted changes, that's fine, but you may NOT just change a date or year to a different date or year. You are more creative than just tweaking "People born in this year" or "Charts toppers from whatever week" to your favorite date.

You may change punctuation as you see fit to make the title work. If the quiz you pick was a Sprint Revolutions quiz, you'll get a time bonus - 5 times the round number in minutes (so 5 minutes for their round 1 quiz, 15 for round 3, 40 for round 8, etc.) Don't say we're stingy with those bonuses!

Oh, one final stipulation: If the quiz you pick is a match quiz, you must write any other format. If it is anything else, you must write a match quiz.

This was a difficult enough stipulation with 60 quizzes to choose from, but quite a few of the 11 who tried managed to pick a Sprint III quiz, including one from round 8 for the maximum.

http://www.funtrivia.com/special_lists.cfm?quizlist=1451

1nn1's task:

So, this is the last round. Here is your chance to show you have leaned a thing or two on the Sprint. This, being the final task also means it's your last opportunity to catch the player before you in the rankings as listed in the relevant thread. Check out their profile. (If a team is ranked directly in front of you, you can pick the last of its members). If you're already in first, wrap around to last place as listed and try to lap them).

Now check their quizzes online - only the first page (top 60) counts (the page should be in rank order). Pick any of those quizzes, then write a quiz in exactly the same category and subcategory as listed. There may be further sub-categories beneath the sub-category as listed on the player's ranking page. It is permissible for the quiz to be published in one of these 'lower' sub-categories but NOT a 'higher' one.

Format:

If the quiz you pick is a match quiz, you must write any other format. If it is anything else, you must write a match quiz.

Restrictions

Note the categories the submitting author has submitted for the past eight tasks (ignore supplementary quizzes at this stage) (If you have submitted double - ie both Wes' and 1nn1's tasks for each leg, only look at the ones submitted using 1nn1's criteria). Found the categories for those eight quizzes? Good. You cannot write in any of those categories. You must submit a quiz in one you have not submitted before on this sprint, or at least this side of the Sprint for those completing both sides.

However, if the submitting author has submitted a supplementary quiz in the same category as an 'official' quiz, the supplementary allows you to cancel the original restriction.

[Eg Official Tasks: Mov, Mus, Mus, Gen, Geo, His, BT, Mus, Lit. Supplementary quizzes in Music and Geo. The Geo supp. cancels out the Geo official quiz so the restriction on Geo is lifted. However the music supp only cancels out one official music quiz. there are still two official music quizzes. The submitting author cannot therefore submit in Mov, Mus, Gen, His, BT, or Lit. Choose one of the other 14 categories].

Bonuses
For each bonus utilised correctly, you get a five minute credit. Each of the eight bonuses is independent of each other. It is possible to earn eight five minute time bonuses, 40 minutes in total. But do not spend much times thinking about it...

The eight bonuses are:
1. All ten questions must be 200 characters or less including spaces
2. All ten questions must contain every letter of the alphabet
3. Each answer block of four questions cannot exceed 36 characters but must be 540 Scrabble points or more without repeating a single answer (Sorry Kyle - that loophole just got closed)
4. All 10 blocks of Interesting Information must start with the same two letters (Exclusions; "Th"; Any word starting with "A"; Interjections, conjunctions, abbreviations and acronyms)
4. Choose an Author Challenge title
5. Write a quiz in the EXACT subcategory as a particular commission quiz. The date of your (submitting author) birthday is the commission number. The particular quiz title is given by your birthday month (eg November = 11th quiz). This subcategory must match the one chosen from the player file. No variations
6. Write all l0 questions in Haiku (5 syllables/7 Syllables/5 Syllables)
7a. Go to the submitting author's worst rating quiz. The title of your Task 9 quiz must follow the same format - Same number of words, same number of letters in each word
OR
7b. Your title contains a minimum of 4 separate letters from J,K,Q,V,X,Z
8. Add together the tiers of your three fifty-fifty badgelets (If you do not have any then assume a total of 1). Write a quiz in that number quiz either from the top or bottom of the alphabetical listing of categories as previously described: link http://www.funtrivia.com/quizzes/
(If your tier score is twenty one you can write a quiz in either the first or second from the top or bottom)

Don't think about it too long
Time is ticking ...

A complete rehash of the Sprint packed into one maze of bonuses - the highest number actually hit by any player out of the 9 who tried this task was four. I challenge anyone to write a quiz (any quiz) that hits seven or more at once...
