Tragic. It looks like it may be mostly lost.

That's ghastly! Such an iconic landmark. Any word on the progress of the efforts to extinguish the blaze, how it started, or any other pertinent information. My sympathies are with the people of Paris, and all the French, for that matter. Think how heartsick Brits would be if Westminster Abbey went up in smoke.

From the first picture released of the interior this morning, it looks like the absolute worst has been averted - the location of the smoldering debris in the image matches the see-through to the blaze in the earlier shot of last night (so it is possibly material fallen from above) while the pulpit and most of the choir area look to have sustained minor if any fire damage. The fact that firefighters have been working on removing art throughout the night also points to the conditions in the main structure not having been extremely hazardous at the time.

Even so, it's likely that the organ, the structures supporting the bells, the paintings and the windows sustained significant heat, smoke and/or water damage in addition to the roof and spire being completely destroyed. However, I am in good hopes that most of what was lost can be faithfully restored - although it will likely take a very long time.

(Note - this is a result of a personal interpretation of the news and pictures that have been published as of 8am UTC on Tuesday. I'm not claiming to be an expert, just trying to make the best possible assessment at this time when information is scarce and actual expert evaluation of the site is not likely to happen for several days)

Also, I just found this official statement:

"The structure of the cathedral is saved and the main works of art have been put somewhere safe, thanks to the combined action of the different services of the State working together."

More news and early assessments from around the world:

"the whole of the roof has been devastated... a part of the vault has collapsed, the spire is no more" (official statement, Paris fire brigade)

"Photos appear to show that at least one of the cathedral's famed Rose windows has survived, although there are concerns for some of the other stained-glass windows. " (BBC)

"France's culture minister, warned that while the principal structure had been saved, the building was still unstable."

According to Philippe Villeneuve, France's chief historic buildings architect, "the historic treasures were saved" and "the 13th century oaken roof structure was the biggest loss" (translated/paraphrased from statement in German newspaper FAZ)

Thanks for that analysis, WesleyCrusher. Thank God, then, for small mercies.

I was fearing the worst as I watched the fire. It's so good to realise that the structure was saved.
