Subject: Bias

Posted by: Donald67

How about making Fun Trivia more international with lees bias to USA. In todays 'who am I' quiz 8 out of 15 questions related to American personalities.

I know that this is an American production but there are an ever increasing number of international payers

This is a touchy subject, that has been discussed over and over again in various threads. Anyone not from the US can see the bias and feels at a disadvantage, but those players who are in the US tend to deny that any bias exists. Their answer to your question is invariably "if you want more international quizzes, write some."
When we do get topics in games like Duel, Expert, Who Am I, etc, more geared towards other countries, the US players start making accusations that it's only because of the complainers, and "the squeaky wheel gets the most grease". Because despite denying the bias, they don't want it to change. I've had quizzes about European War History which only asked about the American involvement, quizzes about dog breeds that originated in the UK that only asked about American Kennel Club standards, and don't even get me started on Spelling questions. But since the majority of quizzes and questions are authored by Americans, it's just something we non-US citizens have to contend with if we want to play here.
Personally, although the bias can be wearying sometimes, I can honestly say that I feel prouder every time I win a Duel or an Expert game knowing that I've done it despite the disadvantages of odd spellings and having history told from a different point of view than the one I learnt. At least English is my first language!

The bias sometimes bothers me, but I confess that, as a Canadian who spent her childhood - at least up to age 15 - in the UK, I have a foot in both camps.

I often wonder why so many Americans seem to be up in the middle of the night .It must be the early hours when dueling starts a new day but there they all are ready to pounce.

Ruby, the new day starts at 2:00 a.m. on the East coast, but on the West coast, for California, etc., it's only 11:00 p.m. On November 3rd, when we do our time change, California, et al, will only be 10:00 p.m. at midnight, FT time.

Then, of course, we have the night owls, just as one does in any country. I have often felt the same, when playing a UK topic, when it's 2 or 3 in the morning across the Pond, and I get paired with someone who's not asleep in Liverpool :-D

UmberWunFayun, Me and some of my ex-team mates used to complain about the American bias years ago and were told the same things that you mentioned in your post. It was obvious then that Fun Trivia being an American site would have more Americans writing and playing quizzes on it and so there was an obvious bias but it was still denied. It caused arguments in the team I was in then and some people left because the Americans in the tean denied that there was a bias.

Over the years with more non-Americans joining and writing quizzes it has got a bit better but in sport there are still too many baseball and American football questions. When there are TV quizzes on the "Duel" they are mostly about American TV shows. I am from the UK and I have never seen many TV quiz on the "Duel" all about UK TV. Why not add US or UK TV to the quiz title.

From a Britt's point of view I see lots of questions about American Presidents and the American civil war put together for a quiz but where are the questions about British Prime Ministers and the English civil war, there must be some on Fun Trvia. I am sure people from other countries might feel the same about this.

Some quizzes put together for the "Duel" need more care taken when compiling them (sometimes there are two or three questions with the same answer).

There are no quizzes compiled for the Duels. The game uses any topic that has enough quizzes written for it to be eligible for a topic mash (mixed quiz).

All questions are selected by a computer program.

However the questions are selected, there are sometimes two or three questions that have the same answer.

It happens in the other games too. Has since I got here 10 years ago.

All topics contain questions that were written by different authors but basically are asking the same thing. How is a computer program supposed to tell the difference between them when picking the questions?

It seems that a vast amount of questions related to German or German History are about Nazis or Germany in WWII. I also find that most questions pertaining to Oceania are questions related to Australia.

I agree.
I like diversity and there are more players from other countries than other websites.
Believe me I know.

When I get question after question about some place in Australia with a population of less than 1.000, it pretty much banishes any feelings of guilt I might have about a pro-American bias. Not to mention cricket. You don't want to get me going about cricket!

daver852, I am from the UK and I hate cricket, lol. The American Bias is much less that it was. What was so frustrating years ago was that any bias was denied which was plainly not so. Like I say it is much better now except in certain aspects. There are still too many questions about American sports in the distant past and I am sure there would be complaints if there were too many questions about UK football before the Premier League was formed in the '90s. Some people I have spoken to (Americans included) tell me that Americans are too insular and don't know enough about the rest of the world and that American culture is not all there is despite the massive effect it has had on the world.

OK, please explain this, why in 'World', which I expect to be ANYWHERE OUTSIDE THE USA, are there more than 60% of questions about US presidents, baseball, US geography and other US stuff? I understand that most Americans see the US as the entire world, but there are about 7.5 billion people who would disagree. There is no honour in fixing quizzes so Americans have an unfair advantage.

daver852 - cricket is played by over 100 countries worldwide, whereas Baseball (really a copy of a game called rounders in UK and played by girls) is played in how many countries? Let's not mention the 'World Series' where the US, being the only serious country playing, will generally produce a winner. See what we mean?

esspee... Quizzes are not 'fixed'.

There are more U.S. based quizzes, because there are more U.S. based FunTrivia members.

If more people from other countries join... *and* write quizzes, there will be more quizzes that reflect the interests of countries outside the U.S.

esspee.

The World category has a subcategory for Government. That has as subcategory for government leaders. There's a subcategory for yes, US presidents. There is also one for UK Prime Ministers.

I didn't see anything on US geography specifically. I did see a subcategory, under there USA subcategory, on US national parks. There were also quizzes on national parks in the subcategories for other nations.

Rounders and baseball are two different games. I despise the game of baseball. Yet even I know enough details about it to know the differences.

Why this thread was revived after more than two and a half years is the real mystery.

MiraJane brought back because people feel as if they are being cheated. There IS a bias against players who aren't American - it's cheating of the worst kind. You have to defend it because you are gifted an easier ride.

Any 'bias' is caused by the fact that there are more members from the U.S., than from other countries. That, in turn, causes more quizzes to be created by U.S. based authors. The *only* solution is for FT members in other parts of the world, to do more authoring.

We are international, in that anyone, from anywhere, all over the world, can join. And, anyone who joins, is eligible to submit quizzes in subjects that interest them. If you wish to see more questions in subjects that interest you, then write quizzes in those subjects.
