gme24~ One assumes that "Gossypium hirsutum" is a hairy woman who tells nasty stories about her neighbours, eh? Reply #51. Oct 18 19, 1:24 PM |

@FatherSteve: And why would one assume that it is talking about a woman? As far as I know, with my minimal Latin, hirsutum is neuter, n' est pas? :) Reply #52. Oct 19 19, 4:42 AM |

tiye ~ In the Common Law, being a common scold or a gossip was punishable by a ride on the ducking stool. "Ducking stool" and "cucking stool" are equivalent. While it was theoretically possible to convict a man of being a gossip or a common scold, this was a rarity. In Langland's "Piers Plowman" (1378) the stool is referred to as "wyuen pine" or a "woman's punishment." The practice crossed the Atlantic from Britain to the Colonies. The Supreme Court of Pennsylvania struck down the offense of being a common scold. While the noun "gossip" can certainly be modernly applied to a male, its origins in this context are almost totally female. ~ Father Steve PS: My post was not at all sexist in intent but rather an attempt at humour ... which attempts are always risky on FunTrivia. I regret that you may have found it an occasion for offence. Reply #54. Oct 19 19, 11:57 AM |

"Lace" went to Geography and "Portuguese man-of-war" to Animals. This was my fourth and final pair, but I'll be happy to pick up any remaining nouns in a few weeks if there are no takers. Reply #56. Oct 20 19, 3:08 PM |

I had resolved to get a bit fancy and start forcing these into non intuitive categories based on any inborn context of the words...but I was boring this round and pigeonholed these in a fairly straightforward way. offal went to hobbies and heat death of the universe went to sci/tech That was my third pair. I will take another but am interested in several so I will wait and see what is left after a few more are spoken for. Reply #57. Oct 20 19, 7:13 PM |
