Subject: 2019 Oscar noms

Posted by: agony
Date: Jan 21 20

There are 38 films nominated for Oscars last year. Of them I've seen five - four of them in the running for best picture.

"Once Upon a Time in... Hollywood"
"Knives Out"
"Parasite"
"Jojo Rabbit"
"Little Women"

I'd be happy with any of three of the best picture noms I've seen winning. Tarantino, nope, not this year.

Other movies I've seen this year that didn't get a nod were "Long Shot", "Booksmart", "Midsommar", "Good Boys", "Brittney Runs a Marathon", and "Ready or Not" all of which were pretty good and some of which probably belong on the Oscar nod list.

I'm not a fan of blockbuster action movies, but there are still good films out there to watch while avoiding the comic book movies.

How about you? Rooting for anything for Best Picture?

Barely get to see any new movies of late.

I think I went to the cinema about twice last year... one of those was to watch Once upon a time in... Hollywood and I really enjoyed that movie. It even contained a scene that moved me which is very unusual for a Tarantino.

Not that I think it will win but I'm so out of the loop I have no clue.

It may be 2020, but the noms are for films released in 2019, so I see no problem with the heading.

I quite enjoyed "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood" - more than I expected to enjoy it. If minor awards (Globes, SAG) are to be relied upon, Brad Pitt will get Supporting Actor, but the movie won't win.

I took myself to see "Ford v Ferrari" on the big screen and loved it, and while it's one of the nine in the running for Best Picture, it is unlikely to win. Was surprised Christian Bale didn't get a nomination.

I've also seen Renee Zellweger's nominated performance in "Judy" and will be quite happy for her to win.

Haha, well it was just a little joke.

Quite right though agony, my apologies.

No joking around here, this is serious stuff. :-)

I still haven't seen Midsommar, but I want it to win.

Quinton Tarantino should have won for one of his better movies. Reservoir Dogs or Inglorious Bastards.

I was quite disappointed in "Once Upon a Time" - while there were some great bits, it left an unpleasant taste in my mouth. Something about these sad losers who can't admit just how sad they are getting a big boost from cartoonishly over the top violence against women. Yes, the audience can get satisfaction from seeing people that we know did terrible things being defeated so soundly, but that's the thing - WE know who they are, but our
heroes don't.

I did love some bits, though - the movie DiCaprio was working on was just great. Need somebody to make that one.

For me, his Jackie Brown was and is underated.

It's not the Godfather or anything but just a complete movie if that makes sense.

He tends to get lost in his desire to show how clever he is and forces a few unnecessary detours.

Hateful 8 is another one that I liked that doesn't get talked about in the same breath as Pulp Fiction and Kill Bill.

I'd call Jackie Brown his best movie, just love it. I liked Hateful 8 a lot, too. In general, I'm a fan, but not this one too much.

Pam Grier and Robert Forester needed their own sequel to that one. They were good together.

I'm actually OK with Brad Pitt getting a Best Supporting Actor for this performance. You get a real sense of who this person is.

I tend to like him better as a Supporting than Lead. In some ways, he reminds me of Colin Farrell - leading man looks, character actor skills. When I think of movies I've really liked Brad Pitt in, it's stuff like "Burn After Reading" or "Snatch", or even his little bit in "Thelma and Louise". When he's the lead, he's usually doing something that could be done by any handsome manly man, and not that interesting.

He had that bit part in True Romance that was great.(That whole movie is great)

And Kalifornia with Juliette Lewis was one of his super early performances that gets overlooked.

Of the ones listed I'd like to see "Knives Out" win something, anything. Deserves something for not involving mutant superheroes or being a remake of a remake. Originality is something lacking in movies and tv shows. And if they do dare to think outside the box, it's either met with outrage or indifference.

Not sure which is worse either.

I've seen only two movies from 2019: The Irishman and Apollo 11. I liked Apollo 11 for its exclusive use of archival footage and audio--no modern day interviews or narrator. I'm shocked it wasn't nominated for Best Documentary (on the other hand, I don't understand what the Academy is thinking with some of their winners). There are other 2019 movies I want to see--The Nightingale, Knives Out, Portrait of a Lady on Fire--I just don't get to theatres much. I catch them on DVD.

I never watch the Oscars--I just see afterwards who won Best Picture so I can still rattle off the entire list from memory (I got bored one summer and memorized the list, and add one to it every year).

I'm a little scared to see "The Nightingale" - it's supposed to be harrowing.

Is it possible to give tarantino a lifetime achievement award?
I fear he will lose to mendes this year.

I'd like to see Taika Waititi win for Jojo Rabbit.

His "What we do in the Shadows" was so funny and unique. The Thor movie he directed was good too.
