Subject: Take a Penny, Leave a Penny

Posted by: trident
Date: Mar 18 20

The premise for this single question game is pretty simple. There will be a list of ten single question topics. As an author, you choose one of the ten topics and write a question on it. After you have chosen your topic, you remove it from the list and add a topic you want to give to other authors at the bottom. Here are some quick rules:

1. In your post, you should include the topic you are taking and the new list with the topic you have added at the bottom. There should always be 10 topics.

2. Please don’t choose a topic that you have added to the list previously. Try one that another player has offered.

3. You must finish submitting the single question you have claimed before claiming a new one.

4. You may post twice or more in a row as long as you are following rules 2 and 3.

5. If two players have posted at the same time, the first player gets first dibs. If you haven’t chosen the same topic, the second poster can always re-post with the updated list.

I think that should cover it.

I am about to upload "tabletop runway" (as soon as a spot opens up in my queue) and, in its place, I am leaving "whist."

I have taken "champion" and uploaded it to Music, leaving in its stead "herpetologist." [And bless you, Saleo, for taking "Pangalactic Gargle Blaster" before it was declared an orphan and removed from the list by the management.]

With my editor's hat on, single questions are meant to to generally easier then quiz questions as with single questions you are catering to a general audience, I would suggest the topics remaining on this list with a couple of exceptions, are specialised topics that would better served within a quiz. As such I would suggest that as these topics are taken up, they would be replaced with more general, more accessible questions.
Just an observation from an occasional player.

Observer's viewpoint:

prestidigitation was a perfect replacement for Yokohama. Why? Yokohama never even appeared on the list and Whooosh! It was gone as if by magic!

MiraJane ~

The player who attempted to take ramen and leave Yokohama is not a regular player in the Take a Penny, Leave a Penny game and appears not to have understood the rules. In the Law According to Trident it says: "In your post, you should include the topic you are taking and the new list with the topic you have added at the bottom. There should always be 10 topics." This didn't happen when ramen left and Yokohama arrived.

You win a special invisible Bonus Prize for discerning the link between the odd manner in which Yokohama was presented and the topic which replaced it! While this special prize will not appear on your trophy page, we'll both know that it is really but invisibly there.

1nn1's comment/suggestion about peculiar, weird, bizarre, unfamiliar, off-the-wall topics is likely addressed primarily to me since 60% of present list is of my selection: wraith, B.P.O. Elks, whist, nabob, Belo Horizonte Brazil, and prestidigitation.

I will henceforth strive to propose only topics which are mundane, prosaic and humdrum so as not to exceed the capacities of our general audience, although I fear we may haughtily underestimate the splendid breadth of knowledge of that audience.

This is, of course, a constant problem with the Single Question game: pitching a question which will not be so obscure as to fall below the qualifying threshold while not asking "Who is buried in Grant's Tomb?".

It strikes me that it is less often the topic of the question which drags performance down but rather the manner in which the question is asked. If you ask for the year in which the National Audubon Society was founded, your question will not perform well. If you ask with what the organization is primarily concerned and if you craft the "wrong" answers carefully, your question should work well.

As for me, I shall strive to do better.

Personally, Father Steve, your additions to the list (as you note them) are NOT the ones that I'd find too obscure :)

"The Guinea Pig Club" is an excellent nomination! I suspect that many do not know what that was and it is a sterling idea for them to learn about it.

Thank you for your kind observation, spanishliz. Perhaps this is one of those issues which is better discussed privately between those most involved rather than in a thread like this for all the world to see.

I'm going to hold back a tick to allow others to exercise the Muse and see if I can't reduce that 60% saturation of my own suggestions previously mentioned.

There's plenty else to do, after all. I baked pumpkin scones today and, while scones are not typically served for supper, I decided to cook breakfast for our evening meal so as to be able to present them to my beautiful bride tonight. I made a fresh-lemon-glaze and, with it, they are quite good.
