Subject: The Dresden Files

Posted by: Catreona

Is there any interest in discussing The Dresden Files by Jim Butcher? I've read the entire series, or rather listened to it as narrated by James Marsters, and would be pleased to discuss it and have an excuse to reread it from the beginning.

I've read about half of the novels, I have never seen the TV show. I haven't read the books for a couple of years. My daughter got me started on them. Did you read the series one after the other?

I read the first book (Storm Front) and listened to the second (Fool Moon). Started listening to third, Grave Peril, but gave up after a couple of hours. I simply couldn't warm up to character.

Never seen the TV show. Audiobooks work better for me than TV anyway.

I read the first few one after the other, then had to wait for each new one to come out. This year was exciting, with two novels released within a couple months of each other, especially after such a long wait - six years or so!

The first couple of books are sort of comic, sort of parodic. I mean, a hard boiled gumshoe wizard? Once the series settles down and becomes more serious, the characters become more interesting.

Thanks for the report, Catreona. Maybe I'll give the series another try.

Well, Danny, it gets more serious, darker and decidedly weirder.

Thanks, Catreona.I'll try the next one up for me which is #4, Summer Knight. Both audio and eBook are available - can't decide which to go for. Both have waiting lists. I went ahead and put the audio on hold. It should be available for me early in 2021.

Okay, Danny, I'll go back and reread the first three to be ready for you when you get No. 4.

Catreona, I found another copy of Summer Knight. I'm now #2.
If that's too soon for you, I can wait - I won't have to take it when it's my turn.

Oh, Catreona! I just turned it down yesterday. No time now anyway to really relax and enjoy it. I have the audio on hold and it should be ready for me in 2-3 months. That's #4, Summer Knight.

Rats! Sorry, Danny! That's what I get for not checking discussion boards every single day.

No problem! I'm actually rather glad to wait. I'm so busy now and I'd feel rushed. This way I can give the series a good chance.

Listening to Summer Knight, the 4th one, now and really enjoying it, Cat. Same reader, James Marsters, and he's good.

Thanks for your comments which persuaded me to give the series another try.

I enjoyed Summer Knights enough to continue the series. A few of the fights went on soooo long, but others probably enjoyed them, so that's o.k.

For some reason when I read Grave Peril (#3), I didn't care for Harry Dresden. But I like him now, especially the way he takes care of others and warns them of danger, even going so far as to try and discourage them from accompanying him.

I truly enjoyed the Dresden Files, until "Changes". Then it got seriously dark and not anywhere near as funny. I haven't read any of them after "Skin Game". "Turn Coat", "Dead Beat" and "Summer Knight" are my favorites.
