Yes, I know that FIFA call this the FIFA Women's World Cup but when London taxi-drivers ask "did you watch the world cup today?" you know the competition has truly arrived on the world stage. :)
As I write this, the competition is about to enter the knock-out stage, meaning we're almost down to the final sixteen with only a few group matches left. So, which are your favourite teams? Assuming that you support your own national team, what other countries' teams have caught your eye? What's the TV coverage like in your country? Are they showing all the matches or just some?
And, more particularly, who do you think will win?!

I remember watching a ton of the 2015 World Cup and really getting drawn into the women's game, some 2019 and last years' European Championships but I've barely caught a minute of this one because of the location and time difference. From what I hear there's been a few upsets, I believe the South Koreans did another job on the Germans like the men did in Russia, but I'll try my best to catch England's next game. I presume the USA are the favourites (?) but we're coming in off the back of a Euros win so I'll back us to bring a World Cup home for once, even though the next game won't be easy let alone any after. I should declare an interest and say that I hope the Lionesses win, not just because I'm patriotic but because they're a good team, they play as a team (e.g. generous passing, no prima donnas), and they seem to be dealing with the hype reasonably well. However, we're about to find out if they can deal with a totally different style of play when they face Nigeria on Monday. I don't think the USA are favourites - and if they were favourites before the tournament began, they're not now. They're not playing well at all, and they can't seem to understand what they're doing wrong. Actually, they're probably not doing much that is wrong, it's more that the other teams (and this time there are more of them) have caught up and have spent money on developing their own teams so they're not as easy to beat. I think there are several teams to watch - England, Netherlands, Sweden, Japan, and Australia. The Aussies have the advantage of being the (surviving) home team of course. Reply #2. Whoa! Well, two of the last eight matches have, so far, ended in a penalty shoot-out after extra time. The USA, who hadn't been playing well, lost on penalties to Sweden 5-4. Can't get closer than that unless it goes to the first past the post. Meanwhile, England, who had been playing reasonably enough and seemed to be getting better, were outplayed by Nigeria... but the game was still 0-0 after extra time and England managed to get through 4-2. Which is a miracle in itself, no one ever thought that any English side would win on penalties but the women have done it. Other teams going through to the last eight are: Spain, Japan, Australia, and Netherlands with two more matches to go in this stage. Reply #3. Aug 07 23, 12:05 PM |

The Aussie v Spain match was such a nailbiter that when Colombia scored first against England I decided my nails couldn't bear it and went out for a bit. I got back just in time to see the second goal so maybe I'll do something similar for the Aussie match. Or maybe hide behind the sofa. ;) Reply #6. Aug 14 23, 2:12 PM |

I think you mean the Aussie v France match, don't you? The one with the marathon penalty shootout? :) My Spanish team is still in the hunt! If it comes down to a Spain v England final I'll either be completely torn about who to cheer for, or happy whoever wins. Reply #7. Aug 14 23, 3:24 PM |
