Subject: EDQ #14 - New Quiz Formats

Posted by: trident
Date: Sep 16 23

It's been a while since we've posted an EDQ (Editors Discussing Quizzes), but with the release of all the new formats, we've decided it's probably time to talk about the best ways to implement them. The new formats can lead to some excellent creativity, and we have seen lots of authors write some unique, inspired quizzes. But, to be certain, the new formats can also be confusing to authors who have written only a few quizzes and even to some of those who have several under their belt.

Over the next days and weeks, we'll go more in depth into the individual quiz formats, but we'd like to start with an initial overview featuring all of them. The suggestions below reflect starting points for authors who are not sure how to use the new formats. There are numerous creative ways to utilize them, so don't get stuck on these. But for those authors who would like to get started, these are some of the easiest ways to utilize the new formats:

Photo:
- Topics with a strong visual presence: art, plants and animals, geographical features, world sites, maps, food, flags, etc.
- Quizzes that ask players to identify an object or place from a photo.
- Quizzes in which a visual element can help give a hint to figuring out the answer. (NOTE: We discourage giving away the answer completely with your photos.)

Photo Match:
- Topics in which the subjects of photos can be clearly distinguished from one another: art, plants and animals, geographical features, world sites, maps, food, flags, etc.

Match:
- Quizzes that define the vocabulary of various topics.
- Quizzes involving people/places and the ideas that are related to them.
- Quizzes that match up famous pairs.

Order:
- Quizzes that ask chronological order (e.g. historical events).
- Quizzes that ask the order of quantity or size.

Label:
- Quizzes utilizing geographical maps.
- Quizzes asking about anatomy.

Classification:
- Quizzes asking about time periods, movements, etc.
- Quizzes asking about geographical location.
- Quizzes asking about the attributes of certain topics.

Fill-it:
- Quizzes that include ideas that can be quoted (historical documents, literature, song lyrics, etc.).
- Quizzes with a narrative asking about various facts.

As mentioned before, we'll go into more detail as we post individual EDQs for each format. This will include what should be avoided while writing with these formats. In the meantime, feel free to ask any preliminary questions you have here about the new quiz formats, and the editors will do our best to answer them.

In a classification quiz with four baskets to sort the items into, is it all right to have four items per basket, or does it have to be five?

Neither amount is mandatory.

And the baskets don't all need to be the same size - but a basket where only 1 item fits is probably not a well-designed quiz.

It's set up with four baskets, and I wanted to make sure four items for each would be enough.

A Classification template does not come set up with the boxes - they are determined by your answers, one box for each different answer you use. If you see it set up with four boxes, it is a Mystery Sort template. I think they may require exactly four for each, but have only made one, and don't recall the details.

Ah, no, I didn't make myself clear. My quiz, as I envisioned and set it up, has four baskets, it being on the rivers of Great Britain; hence, England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. We'll have to see - that last may end up being Ireland/Northern Ireland. So I knew from the outset there would be four baskets. My only doubt was whether four items - rivers - per basket would be acceptable or if it needed to be five.

In that case, the answer is that you need at least two for each category, and it is recommended to keep them pretty even - but if you want ten rivers, that could be 2,2,3,3 or 2,2,2,4, with the former being preferable. Many authors seem to go for 12 (three boxes of four, or four boxes of three) or 16, but it is not required that the boxes all be the same size.

Just to clarify the Mystery Sort question, they also don't come with the boxes set up, nor do they need to be four in number. I made one with three boxes/baskets, which were created as I entered the answers.
