Subject: Okay, THIS is weird

I tried to upload a single question today: nothing radical, just a question about punctuation/typographical symbols. I got this reponse:

"Our system has detected input that it does not like. We have logged this input and an administrator will check it shortly. IP address history logged for analysis.

"Our apologies if this note is in error, but we are currently on a heightened security level due to recent attacks against our server. If you are trying to send a message, write a quiz, or otherwise just use the website normally, please try removing any strange punctuation or odd characters in the text you are submitting."

In that I don't SPEAK whatever language "2: 257.258.259.313"" ia in, I have no idea to what it refers. Has this ever happened to you? I am reminded of William Bendix on "The Life of Riley" who said "What a revoltin' development THIS is!"

There are a number of symbols that are commonly used in malicious attacks, such as what I consider to be the mathematical symbols for "less than" and "greater than". Your question must have included one of them. Questions that involve symbols, even standard keyboard symbols, may encounter this. It is safer to stick to letters and basic punctuation (but not smartquotes).

That string of numbers in the message seems to be your IP address, which has been logged in case it did turn out to be the origin of an attack.

Oh, dear. My quiz is ABOUT punctuation symbols so it is difficult not to use them in the question and/or II. But thanks for the guidance; it makes sense.

If it is a quiz, you can get around the issue by making it a photo quiz, and having the symbols in the images. Single questions, however, I have no suggestions.

Sometimes, the message can also be triggered by a combination of words and symbols. The system looks for things that could be malicious computer code (and it's rather trigger-happy).

One important piece of advice: When this happens to you, do NOT try and push the issue. You're at risk of locking yourself out. If it's the first error, you can try to entirely reword your question from scratch and hope your second try is good (don't attempt a reword - own experience!). If you already had the error twice, clear the question, work on something else and wait 24h before retrying!

I dinked with the quiz, replaced the actual symbols with the English words for those symbols, and the amended question shot through the cyber-hurdles like a dose of salts through a heifer.
