Subject: Photo changes in photo quiz

Posted by: Midget40

Whenever I change a photo in a photo quiz it changes in the 'Manage Photo' section but not on the editing pages. It drives me nuts. Is there any way to reset it somehow to stop this happening

This is due to the way the site caches images. It should change on its own, but not until a point in the middle of the night (FT time).

It is also sometimes a caching issue with your own computer. Your computer wants to use the old image it has already downloaded instead of downloading the images in every instance.

You can do a complete refresh by holding the Shift button and clicking Refresh. I often find that this does the trick, and I can see the new image on the quiz edit page.

Thanks guys but I was slightly wrong in my question. It is showing right in the edited version its on the 'Revise compiled quiz' that's its all wrong still. Which makes it really difficult on a match photo quiz when you want to make sure you've got all the clues matching all the questions and that they look right.

It's not usually such a big issue but I extended the quiz and added pics and changed some others so its really confusing.

Having written many photo match quizzes, I think I know what you are referring to. The "Review compiled quiz" feature won't show the new photo in an enlarged state even when you do a complete refresh.

If you have another device, you can try looking at the photo from there to see if it has properly changed. The only other way that I was able to load the new photo properly in an enlarged state was to completely wipe all cookies and cached data from my computer, which is a bit annoying and not something I want to do just to make sure a photo is correct.

Thanks.

I'll just triple check this one on the single page. Think I'll make sure in future I don't upload any until I'm 100% sure they are the ones I want!

You don't need another device to see what is really there instead of seeing cached images - just change browsers. I recently saw an old image (in a quiz I had edited) which I knew was changed, but when I played the online quiz it was still there. Until I changed browsers, and all looked fine. I hadn't seen that before, but know that checking how the quiz looks after I have changed a photo (including a label photo) I need to swap browsers to look at it.

Yeah, I think that the way the system caches images for that preview mode just does it in a certain way where a fresh reload of the webpage itself (or the system's nightly reload) doesn't affect it.

It's annoyed me several times when I am trying to preview the enlarged images for consistency, etc., and I can only ever see the old image. Changing browsers, devices, completely clearing caches is just inconvenient.

I know absolutely nothing about computers or programming so ignore this if its a stupid question but couldn't this be fixed?

It really is a pain when you want to do a full check although I will try a different browser for this one because I changed them all except 1

Probably the simplest solution is first to collect all the photos you want to use, to examine them closely to see if you're satisfied, and only then to upload them to your quiz template. It may be a very different approach, but for me it works fine.

As well as being sure of the images you want to use, you need to have their order also preplanned - moving questions around does not move their mages with them, so they need to be changed separately. For those of us who are used to writing everything in a word processing document (because changing order was such a pain in the old editor), this is a familiar routine. those who use the new editor, however, expect things to be a bit more user-friendly than is currently the case for some of the templates.

I do usually have them all worked out but occasionally I change track or, as in this case, I increased it to a 15 question quiz because of all the extra info I had Because I like certain question types and/or subjects to be separated from others it means changing the others around too.

I have been in the habit of uploading photos first just because I find it easier to get all of the attributions and everything out of the way but I guess I may have to change that.

This is one of those bugs that is known about, but probably not very high priority in terms of fixing since it doesn't break anything. Will try to bring it up next time bug-fixing comes around.
