Subject: BINGO!

Posted by: kyleisalive
Date: Mar 28 24

We've heard the requests and we agree! Single questions need some attention! In addition to the refresh of the Lounge single question games, we have some new fun on tap, and for this you'll need to pull up a seat, grab a card, and play!

We're rolling out the numbers on AUTHOR BINGO today! Accessible from your Author Central page, this new game is single question-centric. You'll get a card of twenty-five topics and the goal is to create lines or whole cards based on the prompts. You simply need to click the suggested word or phrase and proceed from there, making a question with that key item in the question itself or the correct answer. Each card is a new set; no two cards are the same!

And naturally, there are badges for this one. Of course. ;)

Have a small problem. Have submitted a question with the word " come"
Which has been accepted. Somehow the question got submitted twice.
The editor flagged this as duplicate and I delete it.
.now my bingo card shows that it is still outstanding.
Is there anything that can be done ?

If you can send a correction on the problem one at this link here, do so, and indicate it's an accidental duplicate-- the editor can delete it from the queue.

For the one that does work, you should be able to resend with a note.

If that was sent back by me, I put the other one online.

How can I send back a question that has been approved and it is waiting in the queue to be played?

Nice addition to the site!
I'll be sending mine in the next days. I got some tough words but I think I'll get around it.

Hello, after reading this thread (and also after being instructed to post my question here), I still have a question about the 3 badges in the Bingo Game. If you submit a card with all 12 items filled, does that give you all 3 badges? Do you credit for one line, 3 lines, and 12 words all at once, or do you have to pick and choose which badge it goes with? Thanks.

You will get credit for the Bingo! and Bingo Jackpot badges, but the One-Liner badge must have exactly one line to be won.

My first bingo card had some pretty tough options, so I used the opportunity to win the One-Liner badge to my advantage, completing only one line on that card and rerolling a new card with better words. I am much happier with my second card, and am now trying for a jackpot with it.

Having looked through the single question queues, I think we can say that the Bingo game has been a huge success! I would say that probably about 95% of questions coming through have been just wonderful. I *would* like to quickly address, however, some of the questions submitted for this game that just haven't been our best. These kinds of question are likely to be sent back for revisions, or sometimes even rejected outright. Here are three examples:

1. Questions that are far too easy or simple.

(Bingo word = shirt)
Q: What do you do with a shirt?
A: Wear it

This kind of question is perhaps suitable for a kindergarten class, but FunTrivia sees a lot of very smart people roll through here. It's fine to ask questions that define a word when it comes to less common items (e.g. cummerbund), but for words that most people know, this kind of question is pretty much an insult to everyone's intelligence. Unfortunately, I've been seeing a lot of very simple questions submitted to the queue, likely because an author isn't willing to put in a little more effort to think of a more interesting way to pose a question about that word.

2. Questions that are a stretch.

(Bingo word = bread)
Q: Bread is made by a baker. James Baker held which U.S. Cabinet position under George H.W. Bush?
A: Secretary of state

We editors are happy to see some playfulness when it comes to using the Bingo word in your question, but in this case, the word "bread" has absolutely nothing to do with the question topic. This is too far a stretch. Your Bingo word doesn't have to be the precise focus of the question, but it needs to be incorporated in a way that doesn't distract from the question overall.

3. Questions with very similar formatting submitted very close to one another.

(Bingo words = green, school, factory)

Q: Which author wrote "Green Eggs and Ham"?
Q: Which author wrote "Sideways Stories from Wayside School"?
Q: Which author wrote "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory"?

Questions that ask which author wrote which book are typically acceptable (if not a bit uninspired), but as mentioned earlier in this thread, submitting multiple questions in a row like this with nearly identical formatting is going to cause a number of your questions to be sent back. It's actually a formal, listed rule of ours. There are a few reasons for this.

The first is that we strive for variety across all of our timed games, with enjoyment of the New Question Game being particularly influenced by single question submissions. Imagine getting five or six of these questions on a ten-question quiz that is supposed to be about various topics. It's not very fun.

Another reason is that there are always better (and varied) ways to write such questions so that they are more interesting. We know it's fun to watch all your Bingo words turn orange, then green, but that doesn't mean we shouldn't try to make our questions more interesting and engaging. Fast writing doesn't always mean good writing.

Finally, we have other options when it comes to writing questions of a similar format. They are called quizzes. And even better, we have several different formats that can be used to write multiple questions about the same topic (perhaps a Match quiz in this instance).

So authors, please, remember that the spirit of the game isn't just to fill in your Bingo cards as fast as humanly possible. Our biggest goal is to create a larger pool of interesting questions for everyone on the site.

RE: Questions that ask which author wrote which book are typically acceptable (if not a bit uninspired)

In Literature, we will not accept those at this time, as there are far too many titles that are almost exactly the same. The question would need to include something more about the book (Which author wrote "Green Eggs and Ham", using his typically playful approach to words? Which author wrote the 1978 short story collection "Sideways Stories from Wayside School"?) even if, as is the case in the examples given, confusion is unlikely.

That does not change the main point, of course - one of those can be interesting if well written, ten are boring.

I'd also like to point out that the information sections matter. We expect more than just a repeat of the question and answer, which players have already seen. You've written about a topic - what did you find interesting about it? What did you learn that surprised you? Make sure your information adds value to the question.

I’m a bit confused, not that surprising! I have completed a bingo line. Do I have to submit it, or can I wait and complete the whole card? I guess I’m asking if you can get credit for any single lines as well as the full card at the same time? Gee, I hope this makes sense.

If you want to complete more lines than one, you should wait and fill in the other Bingo words first. If you want to cash in only one line, then you can click that link. Doing so will give you a completely new card with new words.

But will I get credit for two lines in one submission?

The Bingo page tells you how many lines you will get credit for if you turn your card in at the present moment. Mine says this:

"Lines that you will currently gain credit for: 2"

If you turn in a full card, it counts all possible columns, rows, and diagonals, resulting in 12 total lines.

However, if you turn in a card with two lines, you won't get the badge for the single line. It must be one complete line only on the card when you turn it in

Weird question, but if a word on a bingo card uses an American spelling, can we use the British spelling for our questions? 'Marvelous' is one of the words on my card, but in the UK we spell it with two Ls.

Unfortunately, the system doesn't take variations into account and there's no way, from our end, to manually award the square.
