Want a real challenge? Want to play against the best of the best?

Hardcore mode is an optional mode of play for players who really want to challenge themselves and learn new things in unfamiliar categories. When a player decides to enter hardcore mode, his score will be reset to zero, rating reset to 1500, and he will gain a special "hardcore" icon by his name on scoreboards. Special scoreboards will display the top players playing in hardcore mode.

Hardcore Gameplay

At the start of each eight hour period, the system will choose 5 standard categories at random. All hardcore players will only be able to play in the selected categories (*) or the "special topics" (**) of the set for that period. The idea is to force players to play in categories that they may not normally choose, leading to better competition. Hardcore players will also likely learn a whole lot more outside their comfort zone.

Hardcore Scoring

Hardcore players who score fewer than 10 questions correct or who take more than 130 seconds on any game will score NO division advancement points for that game! Thus, advancement through the divisions is a more difficult undertaking.

Hardcore players who meet these requirements in a quiz will also earn the free Adventure Bonus for each game they play.

Special topics are treated the same as general topics, and have the same time and score restrictions.

Can I switch back?

Yes, you will be able to switch back to normal mode. However, you will be reset back to Division 1. Return to this page if you decide to switch back!
