Top Rated Players

FunTrivia's Trivia Rating system is based on the ELO rating method, which is used widely for statistically rating players in games such as Chess.

All players begin with a rating of 1500. A player's rating constantly changes as he beats and loses to other players in a category game. In short, whenever you beat a player, you gain points and he/she loses points. If you score #20 of 50 players at the end of a game, you will lose points to 19 players, and gain points from 30 players. The number of points that you gain or lose from each player is a function of how far apart your ratings are. The distribution of ratings is a normal distribution, centered around 1500. This means that the majority of players should be rated in the 1200-1800 range. Very good players could rate significantly higher over a long period of time. 1500 represents "average". If new players are good enough, they should be able to catch up to established leaders.

To put it simply, beat players rated higher than you and you will move up faster. Lose to players lower than you, and you will lose rating faster. Players who lead in the ratings are more easily pulled down by poor performances. Players low in the ratings are more easily pulled up by success. It is important to note that progression through the divisions is not based on your rating. It is quite possible for a player in Division 9 to have a lower rating than a player in Division 4.
