Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of these can NOT be added in front of "boat" to make a form of vessel?

Answer: Drawing

Of the incorrect answers, fishing boat is known to everyone. Dragon boats originated in China as human powered boats, and dragon boat racing is a popular sport. Banana boat, as a name, has several usages. It was a nickname for both the B-24 Liberator Bomber and for an aircraft carrier.

It is a name for a freighter mainly used for transporting bananas. Drawing boats do not exist - it's surprisingly difficult to find a word which has not been paired with boat!

2. What is the name of a 1958 film starring James Stewart that is also a feeling of dizziness while stationary?

Answer: Vertigo

The film starred Kim Novak in the female lead, who deceived James Stewart before falling in love with him. Vertigo is sometimes called motion sickness and acrophobia is a morbid fear of heights that can cause vertigo, as was the case in the film. 'Rope' is another film starring James Stewart.

It was released in 1948 and was directed by Alfred Hitchcock (as was 'Vertigo').

3. For the manufacture of which objects are the Italian families Stradivari, Guarneri and Amati world famous?

Answer: Stringed Instruments

Still considered unequalled for their tonal qualities, many of the legendary violins, violas and cellos created by Stradivari (or Stradivarius, its Latinized form), Guarneri (or Guarnerius), and Amati are today worth millions of dollars, and are sought after by the best musicians in the world.
All three dynasties of luthiers operated in Cremona, a town in Northern Italy. The first workshops opened during the 16th century, developing over the years an increasingly sophisticated art. The zenith was reached in the 17th and 18th centuries, with the superb instruments crafted by Nicola Amati, his pupils Antonio Stradivari and Andrea Guarneri, and the latter's son, Giuseppe Guarneri del Gesù.

With its numerous workshops following the guidelines of the old masters, Cremona is to this day the world capital of violin-making.

Answer: Ting

Ting (first tone) is the Chinese word for 'to hear'. It is also Caribbean slang for 'thing' and is commonly used to give emphasis to something when placed at the end of the sentence, or as a slang term for a pretty girl. It also can be used to represent the clinking of a bell or something similar.

5. Which of these is a Best Actor Oscar winner as well as a decorative element in Gothic architecture?

Answer: Gable

Clark Gable won the Oscar for Best actor in 1934 playing a reporter named Peter Wayne in "It Happened One Night." Gable roofs have two equal slopes meeting at the peak. The gabled end of the roof is the one that forms a triangular section at the top. Gothic style structures are primarily known for their steeply pitched gables.

The most commonly identifiable feature of Gothic architecture is that pointed arch, above windows, doors, as well as porches and dormers.

6. Chicago, Anaconda, High-Low and Guts are all variations of what?

Answer: poker

In Chicago poker, the hand with the highest (or lowest) spade in the hole wins half the pot. In Anaconda poker, the players pass a certain number of their cards to the left or the right. In high-low poker, the pot is split by the players with the highest and lowest scoring hands.

In guts cardgames, small hands (2-4 cards) are dealt and bet using poker scoring. The losing hands match or otherwise increase the pot until only one hand remains standing.

7. What do a poker hand with three cards of one rank and two of another, a pitcher from which gravy or sauce is served, and the English title of a 1981 German submarine movie have in common?

Answer: boat

A poker hand with three of a kind of one rank and a pair of another rank is called a full house or a full boat. A ceramic or silver container suitable for pouring sauce or gravy at the dining table is called a gravy boat or a sauce boat. The 1981 movie "Das Boot" ("The Boat" in English) was based on a 1973 German novel by Lothar-Günther Buchheim. Set in WWII, the novel and film both carry an anti-war theme.

9. Which annual festival was once called Samhain?

Answer: Halloween

10. Three of these are associated with the title of 'One Fine Day'. Which is the exception?

Answer: A novel by Agatha Christie

Christie wrote plenty of novels, but 'One Fine Day' managed to escape her attention as a suitable title. Gerry Goffin and Carole King chose it for a song they wrote in 1963, which became a hit for The Chiffons, an all girl group from New York City. The title was inspired by the aria from Puccini's opera 'Madame Butterfly', which had its premiere in 1904.

It's safe to say that the title is the only point of similarity between the songs. The film 'One Fine Day' starred Michelle Pfeiffer as well as George Clooney and came out in 1996.

The film borrowed the title from The Chiffons' song. The title has been used several times for albums by artists including Chris Rea and Katherine Jenkins.
