While Singapore went under British rule in 1867, the same year as Canada's Confederation, Nunavut became Canada's third territory in 1999. Both events took place on what would be April Fools Day-- in all seriousness.

Britain's control over Singapore would last less than a century; they became independent in 1959.

Sam Houston, born in Virginia in 1793, migrated to Tennessee where he had a successful career as a politician. He was elected governor of Tennessee in 1827, but resigned to move into Arkansas Territory and later into the Mexican state of Coahuila y Tejas. He became a leader of the Texan Rebellion, and upon its independence in 1836, was elected the first president of the Republic of Texas. He was later elected governor of the state, but was forced to resign due to his refusal to swear allegiance to the Confederate States of America.

The Valley of the Kings in Egypt had been the location of numerous excavations -- most of which had uncovered tombs and sites that had already been raided. In 1922, however, the excavation led by English archaeologist, Howard Carter discovered the undisturbed tomb of Tutankhamun, and he sent a telegram to Lord Carnarvon, the sponsor of the expedition: "At last have made wonderful discovery in Valley; a magnificent tomb with seals intact; recovered same for your arrival; congratulations." Lord Carnarvon died a few months after arriving to oversee the excavation, sparking the rumors of the mummy's curse.
