Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
Answer:

The phonetic alphabet used by the NATO alliance is based on one used by the International Civil Aviation Organization and was implemented in the early 1950s. It uses the 26 characters of the Latin alphabet, which is the one used by most of the NATO countries. Spelling for the code words "Alfa", "Juliett", and "X-ray" were changed from the accepted US-UK usage to limit mispronunciation by non-English speakers.

While phonetic alphabets had been in use in military communications since before the invention and widespread use of radio, the first attempts to standardize a phonetic alphabet for civilian use began in 1927 by the International Telecommunication Union for international flight communications. This first phonetic alphabet was modified several times and eventually became the basis of the NATO version.

The incorrect answers are characters used by various U.S. police agencies.
