This quiz is based on the 2007 edition by HarperCollins. Note that some editions have other titles (not fit in the current time) and the rhyme was adapted accordingly.
"Ten little soldier boys went out to dine // One choked his little self and then there were Nine."
After dinner the first night, all ten people present were accused of having caused the death of one or more people and not received punishment for this. Anthony Marston, who ran over two children while speeding in his car, found this accusation ridiculous and quenched his thirst with a cocktail. Little did he know that his glass contained some cyanide...
2. Overslept
"Nine little soldier boys sat up very late // One overslept himself and then there were Eight".
Mrs. Ethel Rogers and her husband Thomas were accused of having killed an elderly lady named Miss Jennifer Brady. Once, late on a dark and stormy night, Miss Brady had a very serious bout of her illness, and when Thomas finally came back with a doctor, it was too late. Later on in the book is revealed that the Rogers couple probably "forgot" to administer a lifesaving drug.
After all the commotion, Mrs. Rogers went to bed. She never woke - and the chloral put in her cup certainly had something to do with her demise.
3. Travelling
"Eight little soldier boys travelling in Devon // One said he'd stay there and then there were Seven".
General John Macarthur had been accused of sending his wife's lover Arthur Richmond to his death during the Great War. Indeed: the General had found out about the affair and sent Richmond out on a mission he would certainly not survive.
Sitting alone in the sun and staring out over the sea, the general seemed to have decided he'd never leave the island alive. And one of the people on the island (just outside Devon, I may add) made sure of that, bludgeoning the general's head.
4. Chopped
"Seven little soldier boys chopping up sticks // One chopped himself in halves and then there were Six."
Thomas Rogers, the manservant, went out early to chop some wood for the fireplace. He was found with a hatchet in the back of his head.
Once again it was a crime which could have been committed by any person on the island, including the more feeble characters.
5. Bumble bee
"Six little soldier boys playing with a hive // One was stung by a bumble bee and then there were Five".
Miss Emily Brent, a very religious spinster, was accused of having caused the death of her maid Beatrice Taylor. When Beatrice confessed to being pregnant, Emily fired her without a penny, and Beatrice soon after took her own life.
Emily Brent dozed off after breakfast on the second day, while all the others investigated a curious incident in Vera Claythorne's chamber. When they returned, Emily was found dead with a sting in his neck. But it wasn't the bee that had been somehow set free in the dining room that had stung her - it was someone using a syringe filled with cyanide...
6. Chancery
"Five little soldier boys going in for law // One got in Chancery and then there were Four."
The retired judge Lawrence Wargrave was accused of having sentenced to death Edward Seton, who made a very innocent appearance when on trial. At the time, everyone was convinced Seton would be acquitted - until the judge summarized the case and persuaded the jury to convict Seton.
Judge Wargrave was found in a dim lit room, dressed up in the judge's attire (improvised with a red curtain as robe and some grey knitting wool serving as a wig), with a very clear gunshot wound in the forehead.
7. Red herring
"Four little soldier boys going out to sea // A red herring swallowed one and then there were Three."
Doctor Edward Armstrong was accused to have killed his patient Louisa Clees. He operated on her while he was so drunk he botched up the operation, and the patient died.
On the morning of the third day, Doctor Armstrong seemed to have disappeared from the island. He was later found washed ashore, after having drowned in the terrible storm.
8. Big bear
"Three little soldier boys walking in the Zoo // A big bear hugged one and then there were Two".
William Blore, a former police officer, was accused of having brought about the death of James Landor. Blore testified against Landor, and the evidence Blore summed up indeed sent Landor to prison, where he died a few months later.
Blore, Philip Lombard and Vera Claythorne had decided to spend the third day out in the open, as the storm had subsided and the weather was agreeable. But Blore got hungry and went back to the house. As he was walking cautiously under the window of Vera's chamber, Blore was hit over the head by a heavy mantelpiece clock in the shape of a bear.
9. Frizzled
"Two little soldier boys sitting in the Sun // One got frizzled up and then there was One".
Philip Lombard was accused of having abandoned a group of twenty native tribesmen in the jungle, taking all the supplies with him. He admitted he left them there to die.
After Philip and Vera had discovered the body of Doctor Armstrong and pulled him onto shore, above the line of high tide, Philip Lombard discovered his revolver was not any longer in his pocket. Vera Claythorne had laid her hand on the gun, and when Philip decided to try wrestling her, she shot him right through the heart.
10. Hanged
"One little soldier boy left all alone // He went and hanged himself // And then there were None."
Vera Claythorne was accused of having killed Cyril Hamilton. The child she looked after was not strong enough to swim a long distance, but she talked him into swimming over to a rock. And as Cyril was drowning, Vera swam to his aid, fully aware that she couldn't reach him in time.
After having shot Philip Lombard, Vera went back into the house and conveniently found a noose hanging on a hook in her chamber, and a chair to climb towards the noose. She did hang herself.
But curiously enough, the chair was put back in the corner after all ten people had died. Or had they?
To recap, here is the rhyme in full.
