They Were "All Quiet on the Western Front" Quiz

Answer: Matthias Erzberger

The film shows Matthias Erzberger as an official who asks Germany to begin thinking about peace. Since his son was killed in the war, he was willing to contemplate ending the war. Erzberger, a real historical figure who later served as Germany's minister of finance, was also present in the film for the signing of the armistice that was to end World War I. He was played by Daniel Brühl.

Answer: Stanislaus "Kat" Katczinsky

Kat meets Paul and his recruit group, and shows Paul what war is really like: horrible and dangerous. Despite this, he still manages to instill confidence in the boy during difficult times. Worried about how he would fit into post-War society, Kat is eventually killed while attempting to steal from a farm. Kat was played by Albrecht Schuch.

Answer: Ludwig Behm

Ludwig Behm was one of Paul's friends who enlisted in the army together out of patriotism. His case is perhaps the first example to all of these young recruits that battles are not as heroic as they seem: his story is short, since he dies on their first night in the trenches. He is played by Adrian Grünewald.

Answer: Tjaden Stackfleet

Tjaden Stackfleet was another experienced soldier that Paul grows close to over the course of the film. He is found by Paul and Kat back with the unit, crippled; distraught over his condition, he kills himself with a fork. Edin Hasanovic plays him in the film.

Answer: General Friedrichs

General Friedrichs is almost the opposite of Matthias Erzberger; he cares little about the war other than getting the most glory out of it for himself. Opposed to the armistice, on November 9th he orders Paul's troop to attack the French before their reinforcements can arrive.

This action leads to the incredible death toll that comes just before the armistice of November 11th. He is played by Devid Striesow.

Answer: Paul Bäumer

Paul is the main character of "All Quiet on the Western Front", and the story is seen mainly through his eyes. Over the course of the film, Paul learns that his idealistic ideas of patriotism were unrealistic; seconds before armistice on November 11, 1918, he is killed by a French soldier. Austrian actor Felix Kammerer made his screen debut in the role, and won great acclaim.

Answer: General Ferdinand Foch

General Ferdinand Foch is another of the real-life people featured in "All Quiet on the Western Front". Played by French actor Thibault de Montalembert, Foch was a French officer in World War I, known for his aggressive style of military command. As the Allied Supreme Commander, he gives Germany 72 hours to accept the Allied armistice terms.

Answer: Albert Kropp

Albert is another of Paul's friends who enlists with him. He lives the longest out of all of Paul's friends, although he eventually meets his fate on November 10, just hours before armistice: he is killed by a flamethrower. He shares in many of Paul's experiences throughout their time in the war. Albert is played by Aaron Hilmer in the film.

Answer: Franz Müller

Franz is another of Paul's friends who enlisted in the army with him. At one point, he spends the night with a French woman in the countryside and keeps her scarf as a souvenir. This scarf is featured throughout the film from this point onward, being passed on to Tjaden when Franz becomes separated from the rest of the soldiers and meets his death. Paul later takes the scarf from Tjaden, and another young German soldier takes the scarf finally off of Paul's dead body.

Franz is played by Moritz Klaus.

Answer: Major Von Brixdorf

Major Von Brixdorf acts as aide to General Friedrichs. They are seen dining together on one occasion. Friedrichs also attempts to secure Von Brixdorf's future by ensuring that he will have a job following Germany's surrender; he seems confident that this is secured when he learns that Von Brixdorf's family are saddle-makers, assured that saddles will never go out of demand.
