Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "The more they overthink the plumbing, the easier it is to stop up the drain."

Answer: Scotty

With this quote, Scotty is referring to the USS Excelsior, to which he was transferred as Captain of Engineering, at the beginning of the film. The USS Excelsior, Starfleet's latest experiment, was fitted with the new transwarp drive.

When Kirk, McCoy, Sulu, Chekov, and Scotty steal the old USS Enterprise to take McCoy to Genesis, they are aware that the USS Excelsior, with its new speed abilities, will be sent in pursuit after them, so Scotty does a bit of special engineering. He causes the transwarp drive to fail. As the Excelsior slows to a stop and the Enterprise speeds away, Scotty hands what look like bolts to Dr. McCoy, quipping, "Here, Doctor, souvenirs from one surgeon to another. I took them out of her main transwarp computer drive."
2. "It's his revenge for all the arguments he lost!"

Answer: Dr. McCoy

This quote is McCoy's reaction to being told by Kirk that he is suffering from a Vulcan mind-meld, during which Spock transferred his living spirit into the doctor. McCoy and Spock are famous for their arguments, although they really are fond of each other.

As McCoy tells the unconscious Spock, near the end of the film, "Help me. I'm gonna tell you something that l never thought I'd ever hear myself say. But it seems I've missed you, and I don't know if l could stand to lose you again."

McCoy later chooses the danger of the Vulcan fal-tor-pan ceremony, on the chance that it will reunite Spock with his spirit.
3. "My logic is uncertain where my son is concerned."

Answer: Sarek

Sarek says this line to the Vulcan high priestess, when she tells him that his request for the fal-tor-pan ceremony is "not logical". This quote is the one glimpse we see of the possibly emotional aspect of Ambassador Sarek, Spock's Vulcan father. He is obviously quite fond of Spock, despite his unemotional appearance.

The fal-tor-pan is, fortunately, successful, and neither Spock nor McCoy are harmed, although it takes Spock some time to remember all of his past life.
4. "I hear he's fruity as a nutcake."

Answer: Admiral Kirk

This quip is given by Kirk to a security guard who is watching over Dr. McCoy. McCoy has been apparently going insane, due to Spock's spirit living in him. Because of this, McCoy has been speaking like Spock, acting like Spock, and even once attempted, unsuccessfully, to mind-freeze an undercover Federation agent.

By the time Kirk visits McCoy to attempt to break him out from his guard, the security officer notes that "They're moving him to the Federation funny farm". McCoy is in a bad way, but when Kirk tells him what is wrong with him, he responds with the quote in Question 2, showing that his sense of humor remains intact, as Kirk also notes. Soon McCoy is rescued and they are on their way to Genesis.
5. "To expect one to order poison in a bar is not logical."

Answer: Dr. McCoy

McCoy states this very Vulcan-like comment in a bar, following the Enterprise's return to Space Dock. Upon ordering a Vulcan drink, the waitress comments, "That's not your usual poison," to which McCoy responds with the quote above. Spock's spirit obviously has the upper hand within him at that moment.

McCoy is in the bar attempting to charter a passage to Genesis, which has been placed on quarantine by the Federation. In his attempts, he raises his voice and is overheard by an undercover Federation agent, who escorts McCoy out and into the hands of security. It is from this security that Kirk later rescues him.
6. "As we say back on Earth, c'est la vie."

Answer: Admiral Kirk

The full quotation here is "Sorry about your crew, but as we say back on Earth, c'est la vie." This is said by Kirk after he set the USS Enterprise to self-destruct and beamed off of it onto the surface of the planet Genesis, just as a Klingon boarding party beams onto the Enterprise. The Klingons boarding crew are killed when the Enterprise destructs, leaving just the Klingons on their bird of prey to reckon with.

Kirk deals with the Klingon leader, Kruge, by luring him onto the planet surface, supposedly in exchange for the secrets of Genesis, which Kruge thinks would be an ultimate weapon. In exchange, Kirk has Kruge beam the rest of the Enterprise crew onto the bird of prey, leaving just Spock, as well as Kirk and Kruge to do hand-to-hand battle.
7. "It seems that I have left the most noblest part of myself back there on that newborn planet."

Answer: Admiral Kirk

Kirk (or more to the point William Shatner, who plays Kirk) is known for his dramatic flair, but he is, in many ways, justified for quotes such as this. This quote comes near the beginning of the film when the Enterprise is on its way to Space Dock, and Kirk is leaving his best friend and fellow officer, the late Spock, behind on Genesis.

Kirk is understandably effected by the death of Spock. In the recap from "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan" that is played at the beginning of "The Search for Spock", we see Kirk nearly succumbing to tears at Spock's funeral. Likewise, Kirk is the first person Spock recognizes out of the Enterprise crew, following the fal-tor-pan ceremony.
8. "Kirk, I must have your thoughts. May I join your mind?"

Answer: Sarek

Spock's father Sarek comes to Kirk's apartment, believing that Spock left his Katra, or his living spirit, behind in Kirk's body, saying "it is the Vulcan way". He doesn't believe Kirk when he says that no such thing occurred, and says the quote above, hoping to mind-meld with Kirk to discover when Spock gave him his Katra. The mind-meld between Kirk and Sarek only proves that Kirk was telling the truth, however.

Sarek is about to leave Kirk when the Admiral has the idea to search through security tapes of the events before Spock's death. It is then that they discover how Spock had mind-melded with McCoy.
9. "Aye. And if my grandmother had wheels, she'd be a wagon."

Answer: Scotty

Scotty makes this quip as the crew of the USS Enterprise see the new Starship Excelsior for the first time. As the Enterprise makes its way into Space Dock, Kirk comments, "My friends, the great experiment, the Excelsior, ready for trial runs." Sulu, who is obviously interested in the new ship, notes, "She's supposed to have transwarp drive."

It is then that Scotty makes his comment. Kirk replies, "Come, come, Mr Scott. Young minds, fresh ideas. Be tolerant." Ironically, it is Scotty who is transferred to work on the Excelsior.
10. "I have had enough of you!"

Answer: Admiral Kirk

Kirk shouts this as he kicks Kruge in the face, finally pushing the Klingon off of a cliff and into an apparent sea of fire. This occurs as the planet Genesis is breaking up, and Kirk and Kruge are battling. Kruge tries to pull Kirk off of the cliff with him, but Kirk kicks Kruge away before this can happen.

After Kruge's defeat, Kirk gathers up Spock and, imitating Kruge's voice and words, tells Kruge's subordinate to beam them aboard the Klingon bird of prey. The crew of the Enterprise seize control of the ship and pilot it to Vulcan, where Spock's spirit and body are finally reunited.
