Safeties tend to be assigned numbers 0-49. There are typically two in the game: the strong safety and the free safety. In a typical defense, the safeties are typically the last members of the defense the offense encounters before the end zone.
2. Cornerback
Along with the safeties, the cornerback form the defense secondary. Like the safeties, the cornerbacks are assigned the numbers 0-49. The cornerbacks are often assigned to cover the opponent's wide receivers.
3. Linebacker
In the game there are both middle linebackers and outside linebackers. The linebacker plays a role on the defense that is a mix of the defensive linebackers and defensive secondary. The players are assigned numbers 0-59 and 90-99.
4. End
The defensive end can be found at either end of the defensive line. They are assigned the numbers 50-79 and 90-99. The role of the defensive end is to keep the players "contained"-that is not letting it get "outside".
5. Wide Receiver
Wide receivers are assigned the numbers 0-49 and 80-89. The wide receiver is the most frequent recipient of the quarterback's passes. While they offense usually has at least two wide receivers in the game along with the five players of the offensive line, there may be more.
6. Tackle
The offensive tackle is at either end of the offensive line. The primary role of the position is to help block and protect the offensive ball carrier. Offensive tackles are assigned the numbers 50-79.
7. Guard
Like the ends, offensive guards block on the offensive line. Like the ends, guards are also ineligible receivers. An eligible receiver on either side of the ball needs to touch it first. The guards are assigned numbers between 50-79.
8. Center
The center snaps the ball at the start of each play. Usually the center snaps the ball to the quarterback. The center, like the other members of the offensive line, is assigned numbers from 50-79.
9. Quarterback
Quarterbacks are assigned the numbers 0-19. The quarterback is usually the recipient of the snap from the center. The quarterback then has the option to attempt a pass or hand the ball of so a player can attempt a run.
10. Running Back
The running back is assigned a number between 0-49 and 80-89. The running back is usually used for a running or rushing play. The running back might also sometimes be called on to provide some blocking support.
