Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the early days, Ken Tyrrell's team did not build its own cars. What other brand did Tyrrell represent in F1?

Answer: Matra Simca International

They represented Matra cars for their first 2 years. Jackie Stewart won his first driver's title on a Tyrrell/Matra car. That success gave Ken the support to built his own cars.
2. Tyrrell only won 3 constructor's titles, in the same years that Jackie Stewart won the driver's titles.

Answer: False

Actually, they only won one, in 1971.
3. French driver François Cevert died in an accident in the '73 USGP. He only raced for Tyrrell in his career.

Answer: False

Cevert debuted in F1 in 1970 in a March car. Traded to Tyrrell in 1971 where he remained until the tragic 1973 GP at Watkins Glen.
4. Jackie Stewart was the top points scorer for Tyrrell with 178. Who was the second driver to score most points for the team?

Answer: Patrick Depailler

Depailler beat Scheckter by only 5 points, 119-114. Cevert had 88 and Alboreto 41. Scheckter and Depailler were teamates in Tyrrell from 1974 to 1976.
5. The P34 Tyrrell car introduced a curious (at least) innovation to F1. Which was it?

Answer: Six Wheels

In 1976, the P34 model was the first F1 car with 6 wheels, but with 4 on the front. Later on, March would build a 6-wheeled F2 car, and finally, Williams would make the FW08D for the 1984 season, which caused the prohibition of 6-wheeled cars.
6. In 1981, Tyrrell used a breach in the rules to gain advantage in Eddie Cheever's car. What strategy did they use?

Answer: Heavier rear wing

They exchanged the racing wing (made mostly of fiberglass) for a much heavier one (of lead) only for the weight check. With the extra weight on the replacing wing, they'd make a lighter race car. Cheever mentioned it took 4 men just to lift the new rear wing, and it made the car highly undriveable.
7. Tyrrell was the last team to remain with aspirated Cosworth DFV engines on the break of the turbocharged era. The last aspirated engine race win came with a Tyrrell car which year with who?

Answer: 1983, with Michele Alboreto

It would happen in the 1983 USGP, with Alboreto on board in a Tyrrell 011.
8. In 1984, Tyrrell was disqualified from the points standings, after putting lead in the tank of Brundle and Johansson's cars. In which GP did that happen?

Answer: USA-East

The race took place in Detroit, and it was one of the many fiascos that marked the 1980s for Tyrrell. They would never bounce back.
9. In 1991, Stefano Modena surprised F1 by making a front row start at the Monaco GP, and finishing at a rostrum 3rd place.

Answer: False

He finished 3rd at the 1989 Monaco GP onboard a Brabham. He did however, start on the front row of the 1991 Monaco GP, alongside Ayrton Senna.
10. At the end of the 1998 season, Tyrrell was sold. Who was the buyer?

Answer: British American Tobacco

The traditional tobacco company created the British American Racing team in 1999, with former champion Jacques Villeneuve alongside freshman Ricardo Zonta, equipped with Renault Supertec engines. They intended to sport different sponsors (Lucky Strike and 555) on their cars, but were not allowed by F1.
