The Three Investigators Trivia Questions

1. How did Jupiter perform his so-called mind-reading on Pete and Bob by guessing the contents of the letters, at the starting of the book?

From Quiz
"The Whispering Mummy" (Case 3 of the Series)

Answer: Walkie-talkies

Easy as winking really! Jupe had left one walkie talkie on in their Headquarters. And when he returned from the post-office, he just switched on his other walkie-talkie and overheard Pete and Bob discussing the two letters they had received.

2. Who brings the Three initially into the case?

From Quiz The Stuttering Parrot (the second of the series)

Answer: Alfred Hitchcock

Hitchcock's friend Malcom Fentriss had lost his parrots, and asked AH to help find them for him. AH of course sent for the Three.

3. What are the names of the two Blond, Bavarian brothers who help out the Salvage Yard and occasionally lend some muscle-power to Jupiter and his chums?

From Quiz "The Three Investigators" need some help!

Answer: Hans and Konrad

In the "Vanishing Treasure" mystery, Hans played a big role in preventing Jupiter and Pete from being kidnapped.

4. What is the full name of the recurring nemesis of the Three Investigators whose initials are E.S.N?

From Quiz The Bad Guys of "The Three Investigators"

Answer: E. Skinner Norris

We never find out what the E stands for. Anyway, Skinny Norris was a real pain and was always trying to show up the three and trying to come out on top, but usually failed of course.

5. Which secret entrance does not exist?

From Quiz More Trivia about "The Three Investigators"

Answer: Purple Gate Three

Bob's mom actually mentions Purple Gate Eight in one of the books.

6. Tell me the LAST names of the Three Investigators.

From Quiz "Alfred Hitchcock and the Three Investigators"

Answer: Jones, Crenshaw, Andrews & Jupiter Jones, Pete Crenshaw, Bob Andrews & Jonas, Shaw, Andrews & Justus Jonas, Peter Shaw, Bob Andrews

I read the German version where the names of the Three are Justus Jonas, Peter Shaw, and Bob Andrews. But I was told that they are called by different names in the US version, so I'll try to stick to the names you are familiar with (though it's mighty strange for me!): Jupiter Jones - the ex-star who always tries to compensate his overweight by excellent brain-work. Pete Crenshaw - the sportsman who always tries in vain to step back from dangerous actions (but he isn't a coward!). And Bob Andrews - in the earlier novels the glasses-wearing bookworm, later the good-looking ladykiller.

7. What was the name of the Mummy, discovered by Professor Yarborough?

From Quiz "The Whispering Mummy" (Case 3 of the Series)

Answer: Ra-Orkon

It was discovered about 25 years in Egypt before the story began, by him and his colleague Aleph Freeman.

8. What was unusual about Mr. Fentriss's parrot Billy Shakespeare?

From Quiz The Stuttering Parrot (the second of the series)

Answer: He stuttered

An easy one, hence the name of the book. Although this wasn't the only parrot in this book! His dialogue was: "To-to-to be or not to-to-to be, that is the question"!

9. What is the name of the Police Inspector who has lent a hand to the three quite regularly?

From Quiz "The Three Investigators" need some help!

Answer: Chief Inspector Reynolds

After the "Green Ghost" mystery, he even gave them cards signed by him, stating that they were helpers of the Rocky Beach Police Force.

10. What was the unusual name of the client in "The Fiery Eye"?

From Quiz More Trivia about "The Three Investigators"

Answer: August August

One of my favourite mysteries! Especially that 3-dotted Indian guy who comes in this!

11. Who created the characters?

From Quiz "Alfred Hitchcock and the Three Investigators"

Answer: Robert Arthur

Though it's a little confusing... At first I thought that Alfred Hitchcock wrote the books himself. But it is said in the beginning of every novel - "Text by (whoever), based on characters created by Robert Arthur".

12. What was the name of Mrs. Banfry's Abyssinian cat?

From Quiz "The Whispering Mummy" (Case 3 of the Series)

Answer: Sphinx

Her cat was missing, and she called upon the three to help find her cat. But only Pete was really interested in the case and didn't want to have anything to do with a whispering mummy!

13. Who actually stole Billy Shakespeare and Little Bo Peep?

From Quiz The Stuttering Parrot (the second of the series)

Answer: Claude Claudius

The fat man of course! Mrs. Wagonner was the owner of Little Bo Peep.

14. What is the name of the impeccable chauffeur who drove the three around in a Rolls-Royce?

From Quiz "The Three Investigators" need some help!

Answer: Worthington

A really easy question, as he appears in almost all the mysteries.

15. Who was not one of the villains from the "Talking Skull" mystery?

From Quiz The Bad Guys of "The Three Investigators"

Answer: Scarface Sherwin

There was no Scarface Sherwin in this story. Apart from these three villains, the others included Spike Neely (bank robber) and Smooth Simpson (con artist).

16. What did the House of Hamid from Libya deal in?

From Quiz "The Whispering Mummy" (Case 3 of the Series)

Answer: Carpets and rugs

The eldest son of the House of Hamid, whose name was Hamid, was sent to the USA to procure Ra-Orkon, because they believed it to be their ancestor. This was revealed to them by a beggar-magician called Sardon.

17. Hugenay, an international art thief who came into the picture, was of which nationality?

From Quiz The Stuttering Parrot (the second of the series)

Answer: French

Boy, was he one determined thief! He also appeared in the "Screaming Clock" mystery.

18. What is the name of the detective who helped nab Laslo Schmidt in the "Moaning Cave" mystery?

From Quiz "The Three Investigators" need some help!

Answer: Sam Reston

He was the man with the scar and eye-patch, disguised so that he could catch Schmidt alias El Diablo alias Prof. Walsh.

19. In the "Whispering Mummy" mystery, what was the fate of the three crooks, Professor Freeman and his two helpers Joe and Harry?

From Quiz The Bad Guys of "The Three Investigators"

Answer: Professor Freeman was pardoned and forgiven by Professor Yarborough but Joe and Harry were sent to prison

Freeman was forgiven only because Yarborough knew Freeman's father and decided to pardon him. Joe and Harry, however, had no excuse to be forgiven and were rightly sent to jail.

20. What was the nickname given to Jonathan Rex from "The Terror Castle" mystery?

From Quiz More Trivia about "The Three Investigators"

Answer: The Whisperer

--Spoiler--: Of course it turned out that Stephen Terrill and Rex were the same guy!

21. What is the name of the chauffeur who used to drive the Rolls-Royce in the earlier novels?

From Quiz "Alfred Hitchcock and the Three Investigators"

Answer: Worthington

He is very formal and British, but he has a sense for adventure as well. He helped the boys a lot - too bad that he doesn't appear in the later novels. In my (German) version, his name is Morton, and I don't know why. But they've changed the ???'s names, too, as I mentioned in the info section for question 1. Strange...

22. What precious item was the focus of interest in "The Green Ghost"?

From Quiz More Trivia about "The Three Investigators"

Answer: Pearls

They turned out to be pearls with age-prolonging properties.

23. Who of the Three Investigators has made the greatest change throughout the series?

From Quiz "Alfred Hitchcock and the Three Investigators"

Answer: Bob

From the bookworm to the Don Juan. I never liked that; I loved the old novels much better - with the Rolls-Royce, Bob working in the library, Jupiter not thinking about losing weight, and Alfred Hitchcock giving hints during the story.

24. How do Pete and Hamid end up following the Mummy thieves Joe and Harry?

From Quiz "The Whispering Mummy" (Case 3 of the Series)

Answer: They stowed away in the Mummy case, which was loaded into the back of Joe and Harry's truck

It was unintended of course as they got a free ride to Joe and Harry's garage which was a storage place for stolen goods.

25. What was the name of the parrot Skinny Norris managed to obtain, before the Three could?

From Quiz The Stuttering Parrot (the second of the series)

Answer: Scarface

The Ghost-to-ghost hookup told him that the Three were on the lookout for talking parrots, and he managed to get his one before the Three could, and eventually gave it to Hugenay.

26. What group of people did Rudy and Elena in the "Silver Spider" mystery belong to?

From Quiz "The Three Investigators" need some help!

Answer: Minstrels

Without their help, the three could never have come out on top at the end and avoided a scandal.

27. Who turned out to be El Diablo, the masked bandit, in the "Moaning Cave" mystery?

From Quiz The Bad Guys of "The Three Investigators"

Answer: Professor Walsh

Luke Hardin was the foreman of Mr.Dalton's ranch. Sam Reston was a detective out to capture Laslo Schmidt who had created the alias of Professor Walsh. Ben Jackson was an old-time prospector who along with his partner Waldo Turner were responsible for the cave moaning.

28. Which case of the Three Investigators involves the following characters: Steve Tresh, Axel Griswold, Rainey Fields?

From Quiz "Alfred Hitchcock and the Three Investigators"

Answer: "Funny Business"

A story about theft at a comic fair. Despite the fact I like the old ones better, this book is the exception to the rule - one of my favorites. Maybe because it was the first one I ever read :)

29. Pete marked the place from where they escaped with question marks. What colour were they?

From Quiz "The Whispering Mummy" (Case 3 of the Series)

Answer: blue

Jupiter used white chalk, and Bob used green.
