In 1984, I was a young fan and remember hearing about this incident. Mega-popular Michael Jackson was filming a commercial for Pepsi-Cola at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles. There were pyrotechnics involved in the shoot and he got too close to them and his jacket and hair caught on fire. Apparently the product he used in his hair contributed to his hair catching on fire. He was rushed to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center and later moved to the Brotman Memorial Hospital Burn Center. He suffered second-degree burns on his scalp as a result of the accident.

Collagen is the main structural protein in connective tissue, elastin is an elastic connective tissue and fibrinogen circulates in the blood. In 2013, it was revealed by a television journalist that a Chinese company, Hongshuai Soy Sauce, instead of using normal products derived from soy and wheat to make the product, was instead using hair obtained from barber shop and hairdressing salons. They were treating these bags full of human hair (rich in protein and L-cysteine) to extract the necessary ingredients to manufacture this normally tasty sauce. Even human hair obtained from hospital waste was being used. The company manufacturing this sauce has since been closed by the authorities BUT the practice of manufacturing the tasty product from human hair is said to still continue. Just to really get your appetite writhing in delight, L-cysteine, whether or not manufactured from human hair, is also used in the making of bagels, pizza dough, as a flavouring in cooked meats, and in cough expectorants.

Smart Grow in Florida imports hair from India and China (the leftover that isn't used in making soy sauce apparently) to make weed preventative mats which also fertilise the ground. The mind behind this invention is one Phil McCrory. During the days he worked as a hairdresser, McCrory used to ponder how all those shorn locks on the floor of his salon could be utilised. He eventually took bags of it home, stuffed it into stockings, and experimented as to how it could be used. Not only did he discover that his garden bloomed prolifically as a result, especially his roses, these mats are now used to soak up oils from large oil spills. Their efficiency in this regard is that they can be washed afterwards, wrung out, and then reused for further oil spills. Human hair, as a result, is now in high demand. Clothing and furniture made from human hair has already been trialled, as well as other products.

The fictional character Fantine is a young woman in "Les Miserables" who becomes pregnant by a rich student. All kinds of misfortunes happen to her as she attempts to raise her child alone. She becomes a prostitute and sells her hair and her teeth in order to provide for her child. Her hair is sold in exchange for a wool skirt for her daughter. Fantine then succumbs to tuberculosis. Although hair does not absorb oil, the oil clings to the hair and so in effect hair acts as a sponge. Mats made from human hair clippings were used in the 2007 Cosco Busan oil spill in San Francisco to help mop up the bunker oil spilled. The mats were then seeded with oyster mushrooms which digested the oil, providing an eco-friendly way of dealing with the environmental problem. The idea came to an Alabama hairdresser when he saw oil-soaked otters on TV following the 1989 Exxon Valdez oil spill in Alaska. For the other applications, these have been done although not apparently trialled by NASA. In the case of the soy sauce, a Chinese company got into trouble in 2004 for doing this as only wheat, bran and soybean can be used legally.
