From Quiz Follow the Line

Answer: Sydney

Sydney, the capital city of NSW, is often confused with Canberra, which is the capital city of Australia. In 1788, settlement by Europeans first sprang up around what was to become Sydney, hence this confusion. Until 1901, Australia consisted of separate colonies, and it wasn't until 1901 that these all combined to form the one nation we know today as the Commonwealth of Australia. From that date, and up until the site for Canberra was decided upon, Melbourne in Victoria was actually our country's temporary capital. Long and sometimes acrimonious has been the rivalry between Sydney and Melbourne ever since. Well, as acrimonious as it is possible for an Australian to become. That usually boils down to "Get lost, mate. Buy yer own beer."
